Position Summary

Reporting to the IU Associate Vice President for Research Development (ORD), the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Arts and Humanities Research is responsible for developing and managing relationships, services, and programs that catalyze the Arts and Humanities research and creative activity goals of Indiana University and its faculty, as well as engage key external audiences.

This is a new position that has responsibility and scope covering all IU campuses. This is an open and rolling search for IU faculty only. A member of the ORD team, the AVP is also a member of the Vice President for Research’s senior leadership team and complements and synergizes with other divisions of IU Research, including but not limited to Foundation Relations, Business Partnerships, and campus-focused research leadership. In addition, the AVP will collaborate with the director of the IUPUI Arts and Humanities Institute to administer the recently revised IU Presidential Arts and Humanities Program and other relevant internal funding programs currently under the purview of IU Research. The position will also serve as liaison with external entities to bolster existing and create new Arts and Humanities programming and events.

The Organization

ORD’s mission is to create a single front door for faculty and administrative PIs to access opportunities for expanded research relationships, support services, and research and professional development programs. The AVP will work within the ORD division and serve as IU’s point of contact for Arts and Humanities faculty, working with external partners and IU divisions across campuses and disciplines to grow external funding for research and creative activity, and develop programming to engage key audiences.

ORD includes the following organizational divisions:

  • General Proposal Support: ORD staff lead training, workshops, templates, resources, webinars, on-demand content and support, broader impact workshops, etc.
  • Strategic Nominations and Limited Submissions: ORD staff lead proposal support for strategic, complex, large, center-level submissions (team development, proposal management, grant writing and narrative development and editing, budget construction, graphic design, external review/evaluation planning, etc.), with a focused effort on limited submissions that are strategic.
  • Faculty Research and Leadership Development: ORD staff lead DEI activities, career planning, recognition and rewards processes, mentorship program, training programs for PIs and lab directors, etc.
  • Internal Seed Funding Programs: ORD staff lead internal fellowship, grant, bridge, production, project, equipment, etc. funding program coordination, management, and assessment.
  • Federal Agency Research Relations: ORD serves as IU’s point of contact with multiple federal funding agencies to foster and develop strong relationships and opportunities for IU.

Enhance the robust ecosystem of Arts and Humanities funding and programs across IU:

The AVP will have the opportunity to expand the already thriving Arts and Humanities ecosystem, growing existing and fostering new research and creative initiatives, partnerships and faculty teams.

Develop an integrated Arts and Humanities philanthropy and external partnership plan:

The AVP will have the opportunity to partner with Foundation Relations, the Office of Business Partnerships, individual fundraisers, and others across all campuses to execute an effective and coordinated model to pursue multiple, targeted funding sources simultaneously. Indiana University is fortunate to have decades of established, successful partnerships with external partners—corporations, nonprofits, higher education institutions, governmental, and others—and continuing to build on these partnerships in relation to the research and creative activity at IU is a high priority.

Support all academic units in their development of new academic programs, certificate programs, and co-curricular experiences in the Arts and Humanities.

Elevate the stature of Arts and Humanities at IU:

The AVP will facilitate a full spectrum of unique interdisciplinary programming and research opportunities in alignment with the IU 2030: The Indiana University Strategic Plan.

Basic Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications of the AVP for Arts and Humanities Research:

  • A terminal degree in a discipline related to Arts and Humanities, and hold (or be eligible to hold) a tenured position as a full professor at Indiana University.
  • Proven excellence in Arts and Humanities research, creative activity, scholarship, and community and public service, as well as the executive skills needed to lead arts and humanities research and creative activity programs.
  • Proven excellence in Arts and Humanities in leading collaborative research and creative initiatives that obtain significant external funding and lead to demonstrated impact.
  • Awareness of, and appreciation for, the importance of internal seed funding and limited submission programs.
  • A commitment to the university’s goals of excellence and inclusiveness and have a demonstrated history of working effectively with persons of any race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, and background.

Preferred Qualifications of the AVP for Arts and Humanities Research:

  • Demonstrated experience working with national organizations that promote Arts and Humanities, including the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as other key, external funding entities that supports the Arts and Humanities.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and leveraging university/community partnerships to advance Arts and Humanities funding and/or programming.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing internal funding programs for Arts and Humanities.
  • Demonstrated experience with Arts and Humanities faculty training and mentoring programs.
