Sustainable Mining Open Rank Faculty Position in the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering

Columbia Engineering is pleased to invite applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering at Columbia University in the City of New York. Applications at all ranks, including assistant, associate and full professor, will be considered.

Candidates are sought in areas with a focus on Sustainable Minerals, Metals, and Materials (S3M) – a departmental program based on fundamental and applied science and engineering in support of an innovation-driven Mines of the Future approach to extract critical materials from primary and secondary sources and minimize negative environmental and societal impacts. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to): (i) transformative separation and extraction technologies applicable to low-grade ores, with reduced water/energy usage and waste; (ii) novel approaches to extraction of energy-relevant critical materials and rare earth elements from mineral resources and waste streams; (iii) tie-ins to carbon management and renewable energy in support of a circular economy; (iv) deep ocean mining; (v) space mining; (vi) water-lean or short-residence-time extraction processes; (vii) green chemistry and decarbonization approaches in mining and mineral processing technologies; (viii) data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning applied to complex systems encountered in mining and mineral processing, and (ix) reconsidering functional materials with an eye toward source abundance.

The successful candidate is expected to be a leading contributor to the advancement of their field and to the department by developing an original and externally funded research program. They are expected to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate educational mission of the Department. Columbia fosters multidisciplinary research and encourages collaborations with academic departments and units across the university. The Department actively participates in the school-wide Engineering for Humanity initiatives that relate to climate change mitigation, sustainable energy and water, and systems engineering and integration.

Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the advancement of both their field, as well as the department through an original and leading externally funded research program that contributes to the undergraduate and graduate educational and research missions of the Department. Columbia fosters multidisciplinary research and encourages collaborations with academic departments and units across the university. The Department places high value on qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or its professional equivalent by the start date of the appointment. The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community. Applicants for this position at the Assistant Professor and Associate Professor levels without tenure must have the potential to do pioneering research and teach effectively. Applicants for this position at the tenured level (Associate or Full Professor) must have a demonstrated record of outstanding research accomplishments, excellent teaching credentials, and established leadership in the field.
