In this newly created role, you will bring clinical knowledge to the supply chain team in the selection and management of medical supplies. You will build on the success of the award-winning Stanford Medicine supply chain organization as they take the next step in becoming clinically driven across all entitles including Stanford Health Care hospitals, clinics, Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital, Tri-Valley Hospital and other facilities.

You will help shape this role, as the first clinician in the supply chain organization including creating and executing effective strategies to optimize the values-based management of all medical supplies while collaborating with Supply Chain leadership, key physician leaders, and stakeholders across the organization.

A Brief Overview

Category Management includes contract management responsibility for medical supplies, non-medical supplies, and purchased services with a focus on "best value" and Total Cost of Ownership. Provides senior leadership to the Category Management team and Value Based Selection program to ensure unparalleled value is provided to internal and external stakeholders. Creates and deploys a 1) Category Management strategy that positions the Category Management team as the trusted advisor to stakeholders; 2) the Value Based Selection (VBS) program and structure; and Non-Labor Spend (NLS) program to include savings and contract review/approval. Works proactively with the Category Management team, enterprise leadership, and stakeholders to deliver effective business solutions in Category Leadership, market insights, and strategic sourcing methods. Works within the Value Based Selection framework to facilitate supply chain leadership to attain an optimal balance of quality, service, reliability, sustainability, diversity, and value.

Leads and collaborates with Supply Chain, Finance, Accounts Payable, Master Data Management, IT Services, internal customers and external suppliers to develop and maintain efficient, accurate and scalable Sourcing processes to support the enterprise. Provides senior leadership to ensure team maintains accurate and up to date pricing files, negotiates pricing agreements and service contracts with a focus on TCO, reliability, diversity, sustainability, and value. Ensures appropriate policies and procedures are in place and adhered to, protects hospital assets related to negotiation and contract execution. Leads and supports the item recall process. Leads team focus on customer service. Creates desirable employee work environment that enhances employee engagement.

What you will do

  • In collaboration with the Administrative Director of Supply Chain, establishes, implements, promotes, and maintains the vision for sourcing.
  • Leads Category Management team and function.
  • Procurement strategic thought leader and partner for Administrative Director, Procurement Ops & Strategy to help Supply Chain achieve and sustain best-in-class performance across key metrics.
  • Provides input to Administrative Director, Procurement Ops & Strategy on change implementations and enhancements to support targeted success factors.
  • Able to temporarily assume responsibilities of Admin Director when they are unavailable.
  • Develops and encourages strong relationships with customer base. Identifies opportunities to improve service levels and processes to achieve high customer satisfaction.
  • Develops and implements performance measures and quality measures to ensure high service levels while maintaining cost effectiveness.
  • Ensures coordination across disparate systems supporting Stanford Medicine Supply Chain, including Vendor, Item and Contracts Master.
  • Partners with Purchasing, Master Data Management, and Accounts Payable to ensure accuracy of vendor files.
  • Creates strategies as well as tactical planning around the implementation of process and technology improvements.
  • Monitors key performance indicators and financial reports to ensure compliance with budgets and standards.
  • Champions projects and initiatives with cross-departmental impact.
  • Supports Admin Director as responsible party for managing day-to-day Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) relationship.
  • Leads team to ensure all GPO contracts align with appropriate tier levels, are accurate, including item-level pricing is accurate and consistent across all supply chain systems.
  • Oversees contract formation with critical vendors, including negotiation, administration, and ongoing management of vendor relationships, ensuring vendors’ performance meet enterprise expectations.
  • Aggregates, monitors, and manages key metrics and essential information, reporting same to Administrative Director, Procurement Ops & Strategy – using same to develop and drive strategic initiatives and projects.
  • Provides senior leadership over the NLS Management Subcommittees to achieve targeted success.
  • Leads aggressive savings initiatives across all supported Stanford Medicine entities to achieve high value and positively impact the hospitals’ bottom line. Documents and communicates savings success and engages end users in needed process change or product conversion.
  • Works closely with key stakeholders to develop effective cost reduction strategies; leading teams to analyze products, services and contracts with the goal of attaining the best value decision.
  • Using the Value Based Selection (VBS) framework, oversees the VBS Program, including driving new product requests and tracking the evaluation processes.
  • Directs team activities with contract administration, price analysis and vendor negotiations.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and manages contract volume, supply chain information system performance, and value based selection reporting and outcomes.
  • Responsibility for team that manages recalls of medical surgical products, partnering with external departments to maintain efficient and effective product recall process across continuum.
  • Leads, monitors and participates in Supply Chain and Health Care related organizations, learning from other organizations’ successes, demonstrating where SHC/LPCH,VC Supply Chain is leading change and participating in defining global standards in health care Supply Chain.
  • Provides ongoing leadership, coaching and mentoring to staff, including timely performance evaluations, employee engagement activities, disciplinary action, and hiring/termination requirements.
  • Develops and mentors staff so that they are continuously challenged to add value through their actions and to embody a customer service spirit.
  • Leads and facilitates implementation of new or modified policies and procedures based on hospital best practices and compliance with Federal, State, and regulatory agencies. Ensures policies are followed across the organization through education to hospital departments and coordination with Finance, Compliance, Office of General Counsel, and Risk Management.
  • Develops and monitors Supplier Relations (formerly Vendor Management), including policy/ies, electronic vendor management applications, and other vendor management tools as implemented.
  • Serves as Supply Chain leader on emergency purchase needs, including disaster response.
  • Regularly presents to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs other related and incidental duties as needed or assigned.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Ten (10) years of related work experience in Value Analysis, Contract Administration, Vendor Management, Procurement and/or Sourcing. With Masters degree, seven (7) years of related work experience as outlined above.
  • Masters degree, seven (7) years of related work experience as outlined above.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience leading high performing, goals-oriented teams
  • Healthcare experience highly desirable.
  • Experience working with a GPO preferred.
  • Experience managing large-scale initiatives a plus.
  • Experience simultaneously managing multiple initiatives essential.
  • Knowledge of leading industry standards and best practice.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $83.89 - $111.16 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
