Job Summary Job Summary Under the direction of a school nurse or assigned supervisor, perform a variety of duties pertaining to the care and instruction of severely handicapped, medically fragile, and other Special Education students as assigned; assist in meeting special needs, including feeding, toileting, positioning, suctioning, injections, catheterization and monitoring health conditions and special medical equipment.

CLASS TITLE: PARAEDUCATOR SPECIALIST-SEVERELY HANDICAPPED (HEALTH CARE) BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of duties pertaining to the care and instruction of severely handicapped students; assist in instructing students individually or in small groups in accordance with prescribed learning objectives; assist in meeting special needs, including feeding, suctioning, injections, catheterization and monitoring health conditions. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Assist instructional personnel to plan, organize and conduct instructional and training activities with children experiencing various physical and learning handicaps; monitor and control student behavior in accordance with established guidelines. Assist teacher with developing and implementing lesson plans; provide guidance for students in various areas including academic learning, vocational, social and leisure skills, physical development and fitness, and personal hygiene. Tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects; read age-appropriate stories to students; assist in the preparation of instructional materials. Assist students with severe eating problems and monitor self feeding students; utilize gastronomy and suctioning equipment; take appropriate action when students have difficulty while eating; prepare and clean lunch area before and after meals as directed. Greet students at the bus; utilize a wheelchair lift; lift and carry students as necessary; push students in wheelchairs; escort students to and from class. Lift students in and out of wheelchairs, braces and other orthopedic equipment; assist staff members in positioning pupils and in rendering various forms of personal care such as toileting and diapering, dressing, undressing, bathing and grooming; administer injections and catheterizations as directed. Oversee children in a classroom, lunchroom or at play as directed; accompany and monitor students during outdoor activities and field trips; assist teacher with modifying student behavior; assist with monitoring student attendance. Monitor health conditions of students; perform routine first aid and CPR; administer medications according to prescribed dosages and established policies and guidelines. Confer with teachers with regard to planning and scheduling activities, instructional goals and objectives, student progress and pertinent health or behavioral problems. Operate a variety of medical equipment including oral suctioning, gastronomy and orthopedic equipment; operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a copier, laminator, audiovisual equipment and a computer. Maintain routine records related to assigned activities. OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Child guidance principles and practices related to children with special education needs. Problems and concerns of students with special needs. Basic subjects taught in District schools including arithmetic, reading, writing, grammar and spelling. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities. Basic instructional methods and techniques. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic record-keeping techniques. Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct. Operation of standard office and classroom equipment including a computer. Health and safety regulations. ABILITY TO: Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward severely handicapped children. Assist and reinforce instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment. Learn methods, techniques and procedures for lifting and moving children. Learn to operate a variety of medical equipment. Learn first aid and CPR procedures. Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities and program requirements. Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Understand and relate to children with special needs. Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer. Observe health and safety regulations. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: This Class must meet the requirements of the Federal and State “No Child Left Behind” NCLB legislation. Qualifications are any combination equivalent to 48 semester units of college study or an AA Degree or upon passing a NCLB qualifying written examination, and some experience working with severely handicapped or emotionally disturbed children in an instructional setting LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Incumbents required to obtain a Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate within six months of employment. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Classroom and playground environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and a computer keyboard. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor students. Lifting and carrying heavy objects as assigned by position. Pushing children in wheelchairs. HAZARDS: Abusive and potentially harmful outbursts from students.

Valid California driver's license.

This Class must meet the requirements of the Federal and State "No Child Left Behind" NCLB legislation. Qualifications are any combination equivalent to 48 semester units of college study or an AA Degree or upon passing a NCLB qualifying written examination, and experience working with severely handicapped students or the medically fragile.
