This is a full-time, exempt position. 

Nature & Scope:

The Sr. Formulations Specialist position is designed to function as a mirror position to the Formulation Specialist position within the CD&D Department but provide additional specific support to stick pack-based product development. The Sr. Formulations Specialist will also generally assist in all functions of product development/product management, included but not limited to: collaborative ideation and rationalization, initial/technical customer support, internal set up of finished goods and raw materials, in addition to management of the majority of all stick pack formula and sensory development processes. 

The scope of this position ranges from the ideation, development, analysis, and set up of formulation concepts, pricing documentation, recipes, and new product documentation, to providing hands-on assistance to other CD&D team members, to assisting with consultative development work in customer interfacing environments. Sr. Formulations Specialist will be involved in all aspects of product development within the CD&D department but will stand as the main point of contact for all stick pack-related development work. Finally, the Sr. Formulations Specialist will directionally manage departmental and company-wide efforts for continued non-encapsulated product education, trends, and overall formulation improvements.

Major Accountabilities:

  • Ensure overall compliance with all safety procedures, cGMPs, and SOPs related to each job task including but not limited to: proper documentation, product sampling/handling, reporting, and training.
  • Serve as consultative support to both customer and Sales team for formulation ideation, technical support, product development, formulation improvement, and innovation.
  • Create formulations, production recipes and formal quotations based upon customer requirements and company capabilities that achieve internal targets (cost management, process/product management, functionality, in-line with company vision, etc.) along with external ones (customer vision, price point, innovation, etc.)
  • Oversee the development of all recipes, finished good quotes, and finished product documentation that are related to stick pack and non-encapsulated technologies
  • Develop and deliver customer-friendly support material to enhance and validate formulation concepts
  • Review existing and new recipes/specifications for accuracy, feasibility, and ease of manufacture
  • Carry out all sensory evaluation requirements for non-encapsulated technologies developed at ADM-Deerland
  • Manage raw material flavor and sensory-related ingredient incorporation into ADM-Deerland inventories and systems
  • Lead re-formulation and re-development efforts for for existing products that present unexpected manufacturability problems or require formulation-based improvements and/or corrections
  • Manage the continuous improvement, maintenance, and entry of electronic price quotes, opportunity records, templates, and associated logs
  • Assist with new product implementation process improvements
  • Provide assistance to Purchasing Department for new ingredient sourcing efforts
  • Create and manage the implementation of internal specifications for finished goods based upon product quotes, company capabilities, and customer expectations
  • Develop programs and/or methods for improvements within the CD&D Department, including but not limited to the organization of existing data, management/modification of processes, and creation of new tools to improve overall efficiencies
  • Provide secondary support to other CD&D team members in product improvement, prototyping, and customer support functions
  • Remain current with all relevant technical and product-based industry developments and trends
  • Provide front-line support to Sales, Operations, and end customers for stick pack product development both in conceptualization and in final production efficacy
  • Serve as technical support lead for stick pack formulations and subsequent development efforts for new finished goods
  • Lead internal efforts for non-encapsulated product trends including formulation components, new flavor combinations, packaging, etc. 
  • Provide guidance and leadership (both internally and externally) for organoleptic/sensory development for taste-based formulations, including stick pack technologies
  • Spearhead the development of continuous improvement efforts within the CD&D department for non-encapsulated based products (i.e. planning out 3rd party short courses, leading internal training, etc.)
  • Work within the CD&D department to develop long-term monitoring and improvement systems for stick pack technologies, overall improving non-encapsulated products from an Operations standpoint
  • Provide training support for all new hires within the CD&D department, specializing in training for stick pack technology development, sensory analysis, and all other non-encapsulated formulation applications

Job Profile:

Education:

  • Minimum – Bachelor’s Degree in Product Development, Food Science/Technology, or equivalent degree

Experience:

  • Minimum 1-3 years of Product Development, Product Management, or equivalent

  • Superior analytical, multi-tasking, and time management skills
  • Detailed planning and organizational skills
  • High level written and verbal communication capabilities
  • Proven ability to work cross departmentally through leading projects/product implementation efforts
  • Very strong computer skills, including all Microsoft Office programs (spreadsheet management, presentations, document, and form/template development, etc.), data tracking / manipulation / presentation
  • Strong analytical skills including the ability to quickly learn new tasks/processes and identify areas for improvement
  • Advanced problem solving and reasoning skills; both mathematics and physics-based problem solving, along with interpersonal/interdepartmental problem solving
  • Sensory analysis and flavour/organoleptic development skills

  • Valid driver license
  • Ability to lift up to 50lb, multiple times per week
