HEALTH CLERK

DEFINITION

Under general supervision of the school nurse and/or the site administrator, to perform clerical and other support activities related to the health and first aid programs of the district; and do other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Personnel in this job classification may perform any combination of the essential duties shown below. This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge, or abilities associated with this classification, but is intended to accurately reflect the principle job elements.

  • Records information in pupil records related to immunizations and physical examinations.
  • Prepares health records for interdistrict transfer.
  • Reviews and updates information in pupil records related to pupil health.
  • Assists with first aid and pupil health concerns.
  • Assists the school nurse in conducting screening programs (scoliosis, vision, hearing, dental, etc.).
  • Assists the school nurse with kindergarten registration.
  • Provides other clerical and health-related services as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Principles, methods, and practices of first aid;

Procedures, methods, techniques and strategies utilized in dealing with sensitive and confidential health issues and concerns;

Emergency service agencies within the community;

Record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures;

Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior.

Ability to:

Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward pupils of varied age groups;

Communicate effectively in oral and written form;

Evaluate pupil illness or emergency situations and determine an appropriate course of action;

Establish and maintain a variety of files and records;

Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may also involve walking or standing for extended periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

Experience:

One year experience performing a variety of general office and clerical work, preferably in a health facility.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, including or supplemented by coursework in typing, record management, and general office practices.

Certificate Requirement

Current first aid and CPR certificate.

Conditions of Employment

Insurability by District’s liability insurance carrier. Employment is contingent upon fingerprint and background clearance, and proof of a recent negative tuberculosis test result.
