In partnership with scientific faculty and staff, the Applied Research Engineer will plan, design, construct, modify, and/or repair electronic, electrical, and mechanical equipment used for research. Designs, fabricates, and tests digital and analog electronic circuitry. Designs and constructs new electronic devices/instruments and modifies existing devices/instruments. Prepares sketches, schematic drawings, and documentation of electronics subsystems. Utilizes CAD tools and methods to document drawings which lead to manufacture of instruments. Constructs and assists in the testing and evaluation of electronic prototypes. Assists in design, layout, construction and installation of devices and systems to meet specific needs of an experiment. Assists in fabricating parts, installation of instrumentation and wiring, and assembling components. Provides technical support for maintaining scientific laboratory instruments through diagnosis, repair, and calibration. Maintains and calibrates shared and non-shared lab instrumentation in graduate research labs and undergraduate reaching labs such as IR and UV spectrometers, mass spectrometers, x-ray diffractometers, liquid and gas chromatography systems, laser spectroscopy systems and other laboratory apparatus. Supports the interface of hardware, software, and interfaces of computer devices and instruments for scientific applications. Advises on the maintenance and calibration schedules as appropriate. Consults with faculty, staff and students about proper operating methods and procedures to obtain optimum performance of scientific equipment. Consults with faculty, students, and post-doctoral researchers on instrument design. Assists with routine shop operations such as maintaining stock and ordering supplies and equipment. Researches material costs and availability for ordering and component inventory. Prepares written documentation of completed projects. Participates in training seminars and courses to refresh or establish new skills to maintain instrumentation.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent experience and two years of relevant experience.

Desired Qualifications: Experience in the design, fabrication, and testing of digital and analog electronic circuits desired. Training and/or experience in CAD software tools, programming, and familiarity with microcontrollers desired. Experience in servicing and repairing electronic equipment at the component level is desired.

Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $67,000 - $90,300. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
