The Role: CUSTOM INDEX DEVELOPER, IMPG – DEVELOPMENT

Custom Index Development is a global team responsible for developing and launching index products for third party clients. Index Developers are responsible for creating indices within S&P’s calculation engine, reviewing requirements, and coordinating with clients and internal stakeholders on a global scale.

The Team: The Custom Index Development team has personnel in both New York New Jersey, London Mumbai. The team is responsible for building bespoke indices from custom clients’ methodologies. The team is currently 8 employees in the role, you will be responsible for development workflow processes as well as interfacing with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

The Impact: Each custom index has direct revenue linked to it and thereby contributes to the overall revenue stream generated by SPDJI. builds on the capabilities of the custom team by continuously expanding the calculation types we cover and pushing the team forward to support cutting edge investment ideas.

  • This role will offer the opportunity to connect with stakeholders from all aspects of SPDJI’s business and a direct connection to a wide variety of client and product types.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and calculating equity, multi-asset, commodities, and/or crypto indices. This includes performing analytical research to determine selection & weighting, adjusting data in S&P’s calculation engine, and ensuring adherence to the methodology.
  • Work with Custom Index Management & Production, clients, and other stakeholders to determine optimal index structure based on the client’s needs. Provide support to global client base.
  • Closely coordinate with Custom Index Management & Production on the launch of new index products by providing robust documentation. Responsible for determining operational settings.
  • Work with IT to ensure service requests are handled in a timely manner. Occasional coordination with IT is also required to test system enhancements and perform quality control processes.
  • Work closely with R&D and Product Management to ensure proper documentation within index methodologies.
  • Review workflow for automation opportunities.
  • Manage multiple projects involving changing priorities and aggressive deadlines.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of global financial markets, particularly in the equity space.
  • Solid grasp of index mathematics and calculation methods.
  • Must be able to work independently on multiple projects with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel user, proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience reviewing index methodologies.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required with a focus in Finance, Mathematics, Economics, or Business. Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Must be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and quantitative capabilities to solve original, non-routine problems in a timely and insightful manner.
  • Experience with financial platforms such as Refinitiv, Factset, CapIQ, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate with clients and colleagues globally.
  • Experience dealing with customers in a time-sensitive demanding environment where interpretation of data has both objective and subjective components requiring persuasion and influencing skills.
  • 7-10+ years of professional experience in index management operations or similar role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strength in quantitative analysis including optimization.
  • Advanced technical ability with VBA, Python, and/or Matlab.
