What we need:

We need a Sr. Research & Development Engineer who can do more with Mohawk. This role formulates, recommends and directs research and development programs to meet business needs for improvement and cost reduction of existing products and processes, introduction of new products and processes for existing businesses, and development of new business applications for existing core technologies. This position serves as project manager or key contributor on major, high-risk, high dollar, and complex projects that cross organizational lines. The Sr. R & D Engineer will consult with the division’s senior management on issues impacting the strategic short- and long-term goals and objectives of the SBU. 

What you’ll do:

  • Strategic Planning: Participates with senior management in developing strategic organizational goals and recommending projects to achieve these goals. Manages projects to meet business objectives.
  • Product Development: Formulates, recommends, and executes research programs for improvement and cost reduction of existing products, the development of new products, processes, and raw materials, and the development of new business applications for existing core technologies. Consults with customers, sales and marketing, and operations on new product requirements. Prepares work progress reports, and recommends the addition, expansion, or discontinuation of projects.
  • Development Protocols / Reports: Reviews and evaluates research and development protocols, results, and conclusions. Ensures that all research and development activities are conducted under appropriate standards for completeness, accuracy, and documentation to conform to industry expectations for safety, efficacy, and compatibility within cost, delivery date, and quality standards.
  • Design Specification / Testing: Understand product functional and customer requirements. Develops tests to verify product meets requirements and sets appropriate specifications to ensure product reliability and manufacturability. Conducts testing of new products and investigates customer complaints on existing products to determine appropriate resolution.
  • Managerial: Defines, develops, organizes, supervises, and coordinates division research and development projects of diverse scope and complexity. Develops project plans, and manages resources and activities by organizational priorities and cost control initiatives. Manages research activities including marketing, lab research, engineering development, and pilot production operations. Works directly with product development, manufacturing, information technology, engineering, and other stakeholders to ensure the seamless transfer of operations from the research and testing environment to day-to-day manufacturing. During the initial implantation phase, monitors performance against established goals and objective and advises on modifications or enhancements to achieve optimum efficiency and productivity. Oversees the training and development of operations staff.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Research and Development or related discipline, required.
  • PHD with emphasis in Research & Development in the field of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering Research and Development or related discipline, preferred.
  • 4+ years of demonstrated management/leadership experience.
  • 10 years of job specific work experience with demonstrated professional growth and achievement in similar industry. 
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidiscipline, high-performance work teams/groups and managing resources to meet organizational goals across multiple projects.

  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communications skills. Ability to effectively exercise tact, discretion, judgment, and diplomacy when interacting and/or negotiating with internal and external customers, senior management, vendors, and regulatory agencies. Ability to act as a managerial advisor on professional and technical issues with view towards reaching strategic decisions. Ability to manage conflicting demands for resources through negotiation.
  • Ability to perform in a nonhierarchical, flat organization and to thrive in a somewhat unstructured “hands-on” environment that demands a consultative approach and solutions that span multiple business areas within the corporation.
  • Dealing with Ambiguity: Can effectively cope with change; can shift gears comfortably; can decide and act without having the total picture; isn't upset when things are up in the air; doesn't have to finish things before moving on; can comfortably handle risk and uncertainty.

2-3 direct reports. May also have functional dotted-line supervision and/or oversight for management, professional and staff employees working as a project team or responsible for closely aligned tasks and assignments.
