Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Advertising Data Strategy. The start date for this position is August 2024.

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise or interest in topic areas that complement one or more of the teaching and research specialization(s) in the department. This may include data strategy and AI technology, social media analytics, international advertising, and advertising insight/strategy. The candidate is to be a catalyst who can introduce innovative views, inspire students, and build their confidence in data and AI, while equipping students with the skills they will need for the workplace of the future.

Qualifications

Compelling candidates will show

  • Enthusiasm and promise for exemplary teaching, whether through prior teaching experience or similar professional roles mentoring/supervising young advertising practitioners.
  • The evidence of familiarity with the research/planning sector of advertising industry, bringing cutting-edge knowledge to classroom, and sharpening students skillsets that closely meet the industry demands.
  • Active engagement in scholarly research/creative activity by maintaining a strong research agenda in the individual area of expertise.

Master’s degree required. A Ph.D. degree in Advertising or a related field is preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

  • The candidate may not be a database management geek, but someone who has experience in practical and creative thinking of merging big data/AI with strategic and analytic insights that support cross platforms executions.
  • Professional experience in Advertising at the national and international level is highly desirable. A Master’s degree is required.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching: The ideal candidates should be able to integrate profession-based learning experiences into courses via field experiences or projects, teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. The new hire will be expected to teach Advertising Research and Planning, Digital Branding and Strategy, Big Ideas in Advertising, and other courses that complement the individual’s expertise or specialization.
  • Research: The person has passion and deeper understanding to cutting-edge advertising research/creative activity and ground-breaking technology.
  • Service: The new hire will be expected to contribute to service-related initiatives, including academic and career advising of students, school and university committee service, departmental curriculum development and assessment, and community/professional outreach.

The Department’s student advertising agency teams (called “The Newhouse” or TNH for short) have historically done very well competing nationally and even internationally, including winning the International Qatar 2014 Advertising Competition. TNH teams have won seven 1st place finishes at the District 2 level of the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) in the past 11 years, and won the national title of the NSAC competition in 2009 and 2018.
