Job Description:

The Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences in the College of the Coast and Environment at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of chemical oceanography at the level of Assistant Professor. We seek a broadly trained marine geochemist who complements the interdisciplinary nature of our program. While candidates from all sub-disciplines of marine geochemistry are encouraged to apply, candidates with expertise in organic geochemistry, trace element and isotope (TEI) biogeochemistry are especially encouraged to apply. This faculty position will have equal responsibilities in teaching (50%) and research (50%). Service to university programs and broader community services is encouraged.

The Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences has strong biological, physical, chemical, geological, fisheries, and wetland biogeochemistry programs in continental shelf, coastal, estuarine, and wetland environments. Located in the state capital of Baton Rouge, on the banks of the Mississippi River, LSU is surrounded by diverse aquatic and coastal habitats. LSU is located just 100 miles from the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, with access to surrounding coastal environments supported by facilities including boats, field stations, laboratory space, and dormitories.

The LSU College of Coast and Environment also maintains a field support facility staffed by experienced and professional technicians, boat operators, divers, machinists, and engineers. The field support group works in a dedicated 8000 sq. ft. building housing separate space for maintenance and calibration laboratories, fabrication and machine shops, and equipment storage.

Job Summary/Responsibilities:

50% Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in Chemical Oceanography/Marine Geochemistry.

30% Develop and maintain a rigorous, externally-funded and independent research program in aquatic/marine geochemistry with relevance to coastal and marine environments.

10% Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research.

10% Provide service/advice to the University, and local, state and federal agencies. Inclusiveness and diversity are academic imperatives. Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in chemistry, geology, oceanography, marine sciences, environmental sciences, or related fields. Specific Experience:

Postdoctoral experience preferred. Applicants must have a promising research plan and a strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate education.
