Research Project Coordinator- The Odoms-Young Nutrition Liberation, Food Sovereignty, and Justice Laboratory

The Odoms-Young Nutrition Liberation, Food Sovereignty, and Justice Laboratory examines the pathways and mechanisms linking the social and structural determinants of health (SSDOH) and diet and related health outcomes in low-income populations and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and to develop culturally/community responsive programs and policies that promote health equity, food justice, and community resilience.

Our lab’s mission is to create deep relationships and conduct transformational community/public health nutrition research and education that promotes robust social impact, generational justice, equity, and well-being, with a key emphasis on communities impacted by structural oppression and historic disinvestment. Specifically, our goal is to engage in interdisciplinary research that transforms institutions, policies, and practices to help cultivate equitable food and nutrition systems through critical inquiry, community engagement, and action research.

Moreover, in addition to applying traditional research approaches, in connection with our affiliate program, the Food and Nutrition Education in Communities Program (FNEC), we partner with agencies, organizations, universities, and state and local government to support dietary assessment, environmental scans, survey development, and analysis, participatory program planning, intervention co-design, and evaluation and training sessions on topics including nutrition equity, community, and culturally responsive nutrition education, food justice, food and nutrition security, social and structural determinants of dietary behaviors and health outcomes, and community capacity building.

What you will do:

The Research Project Coordinator will assist in identifying experts in the field, i.e., participant stakeholders, including researchers, advocates, changemakers, and government and organization leaders, who will participate in the research study and will develop strong working relationships with them to achieve project goals. The Coordinator will advise and work closely with the principal investigator to establish study strategies and milestones and will be responsible for managing project timelines, participant stakeholder deliverables, the development, dissemination, and data collection for the Delphi study, and stakeholder communications. The Coordinator will lead the work with Cornell Library personnel to complete relevant literature reviews, independently conduct research, and assist with writing and developing content for manuscripts, reports, IRB protocols, and presentations.

This is a full-time, two-year position with the possibility of renewal.

Key responsibilities include:

The coordinator will manage the logistics associated with a year-long Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant-funded project focused on a scoping literature review, participatory systems dynamic modeling, and a Delphi study to achieve the following three key outcomes:

Explain the multiple pathways linking anti-black and anti-indigenous racism and other forms of structural oppression within the food system (and related systems) to inequities in food/nutrition security and diet-related chronic disease outcomes. Understand the mechanisms linking food justice/sovereignty (and broader equity efforts), community/family resilience, and positive mental and physical health outcomes in Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations. Inform the development of a community-driven, trauma-informed, BIPOC-centered research agenda regarding programmatic/policy interventions to promote food justice/sovereignty and address inequities in food and nutrition insecurity and diet-related chronic disease outcomes.
