Job Description Summary:

Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University’s Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong English skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.

Job Description:

Seeking a highly self-motivated, hardworking postdoctoral candidate with physiological and/or immunology experience to work in a laboratory at the University of Kansas Medical Center, focused studying how peptides prevent viral infection in the lungs. This research will use biochemical, imaging and microbiological techniques both in vitro and in vivo to develop novel antiviral compounds against RSV and other viruses.

Candidate with a strong background in immunology or physiology and prior experience of working with peptides and RSV in the lung will be preferred. Experience working with BSL 2 pathogens is essential. Competence in areas of critical thinking, cell culture/technical skills and written/communication skills, with prior publication record and ability to work independently as well as part of team is required.

Required Qualifications

Education: PhD in physiology, immunology, or a related field

Work Experience:

  • A record of scientific productivity as evidenced in application materials
  • Proficiency in cell culture, microscopy, and viral models such as RSV
  • Experience with peptide biochemistry, viral pathogenesis, imaging

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Proficiency in animal models of lung disease
  • Experience with transgenic mouse handling, flow cytometry, or mass spectrometry

Job Duties Outlined

  • Perform in vitro studies of RSV infection in cell culture models
  • Perform biochemical experiments with RSV and antiviral peptides.
  • Participate in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Design independent experiments in consultation with supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
