Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Institute (TCI), in collaboration with the Valley Health System, seeks an experienced Hematologic Oncologist to develop and direct a new Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Service at the Valley Health System. 

The Medical Director will be based initially at Mount Sinai as a member of the Multiple Myeloma and the Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant Programs. Protected time will be provided for planning the Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Service at Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care. It is anticipated that over the course of 3 years the Medical Director will progressively spend more clinical, research, and administrative time at The Valley Health System for on-site development and implementation of the Service while maintaining a presence at the MSHS. In collaboration with clinical and administrative leaders from both organizations, the Medical Director will be responsible for preparing the regulatory documents, including policies and procedures, and other materials required for activating and accrediting the Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Service at Valley. It is anticipated that over a period of 1 to 2 years, the Medical Director will progressively spend more clinical, research, and administrative time at The Valley Health System for on-site development and implementation of the Service. The Medical Director will be responsible for the overall quality of the Service, overseeing patient care, research, and education. 

The Tisch Cancer Center 

The Tisch Cancer Institute (TCI), a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, employs a multidisciplinary approach to cancer research and treatment, with the goal of advancing clinical breakthroughs that help prevent and eradicate cancer. The mission of The Tisch Cancer Institute is to advance basic, clinical and population health cancer research, in order to prevent cancer in healthy individuals and improve the lives of cancer patients and their families in our diverse communities. Established in 2008 through the generosity of James and Merryl Tisch, The TCI has recruited more than 80 prominent scientists and physicians whose expertise spans basic, clinical, and population science research. Together they have developed innovative and translational research programs that build upon Mount Sinai’s history of medical discovery and outstanding patient care. They continually collaborate and work in partnership with multiple disciplines across the Mount Sinai Health System to advance novel treatments, such as immunotherapy, that offer hope for those at risk for or living with cancer. The TCI is an integral part of the Mount Sinai Health System and is continually on the forefront of medical and scientific training, biomedical research, and patient care. The Tisch Cancer Hospital will open by 2027, will open with new "patient-centric" treatment initiatives, inspired by the promise of the state-of-the-art facility. 

Multiple Myeloma Center of Excellence

Mount Sinai’s Center of Excellence for Multiple Myeloma is known throughout the world as a leader in integrating patient care and translational research. With four locations, 55 clinicians and staff, 36 scientists and research personnel, and a high patient volume, that continues to grow. Our patient base is notably diverse, offering physicians significant opportunities to make an impact on advancing treatment and supporting health equity through research and clinical initiatives.

Multiple myeloma program has a diverse clinical trials portfolio, including first-in-human and phase 1 and 2 clinical trials, CAR-T and Bi-specific antibody trials. Our program has contributed to every new multiple myeloma drug that has been introduced over the past 10+ years, and we continue to play a significant role in drug development. 

The Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Transplantation Program at Mount Sinai is a Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)-accredited Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Collection, Processing, and Transplant Site. Our program performs 300 cell therapy procedures annually. These include all modalities of immune effector cells, autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplants. We have a very active research portfolio including protocols from cooperative groups, investigator-initiated trials, and industry-sponsored studies. Our program has a cellular therapy service to oversee CARTs and other immune effector cell treatments. We offer both commercial and investigational CAR T-cell products to patients and continue to onboard additional commercial products as they become FDA-approved. CAR T-cell therapy is FACT accredited at Mount Sinai under the Bone Marrow & Stem Cell Transplantation Program’s Immune Effector Cell accreditation.

Valley Health System

Valley has joined forces with New York's Mount Sinai Health System to bring exceptional and distinctive care to patients in northern New Jersey. Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care provides unique clinical programs for our patients, as well as educational and research opportunities for our staff. We have QOPI certification and accreditation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Valley’s new state-of-the-art hospital, directly across from our cancer center, is scheduled to open in April 2024, and will anchor a 40-acre healthcare campus. 

Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer offer a supportive and collegial environment, and the potential for professional growth. An on-site team at Valley provides support for our active research program, which includes investigator-initiated trials in addition to NCTN and industry-sponsored research. Teaching oportunities will be available in 2024 when Valley opens its Internal Medicine Residency. A Hematology/Oncology fellowship is planned for 2026. 

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO
  • Board certified in Hematology and/or Medical Oncology.
  • Experience with cellular therapy including stem cell transplantation and CAR-T therapy.
  • Demonstrated track record in excellent care of patients with hematologic malignancies.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to lead and work effectively in a team environment. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Director, Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Program, Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care

  • Develop and provide leadership to a Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy Program at Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care.
  • Collaborate with the leadership of the Tisch Cancer Center of the Mount Sinai Health System and the leadership of The Valley Health System to plan and develop the Program, including clinical, research, educational, and marketing activities.
  • Identify opportunities for clinical trials of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy; take steps necessary to make such trials available to patients at Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care.
  • Be responsible for quality of the clinical and research components of the Program, leading the planning, implementation, assessment, and reporting of quality improvement activities within the Program.
  • Participate in recruitment of providers, nurses, and other support staff for the Program.
  • Collaborate in marketing and community outreach activities as they relate to the Program.
  • Provide presentations to professional and lay audiences regarding the Program.
  • Participate in the strategic planning process for Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care as requested.
  • Experience in successfully developing, mentoring, and managing physicians and staff resulting in effective clinical and research operations. 

Hematology/Oncology Physician, Oncology Services

  • Provide consultation and management of patients with suspected or proven benign or hematologic neoplastic disorders.
  • Follow established Oncology Services office practice workflows.
