Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of the Senior BI Developer is to analyze and deliver datasets in response to faculty healthcare data requests. The Senior BI Developer will contribute to Compass’ mission of serving the Anschutz research community within a HIPAA-compliant environment. The Senior BI Developer will support and mentor the data delivery team, as well as support health care investigators, faculty, and staff, internal and external to Compass. A successful Senior BI Developer candidate will own and drive requests and projects to completion, communicate expectations, be a creative problem solver, and write documentation clearly and concisely.

Supervision Received: This position will report to the Data Request Program Manager

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Independently writes and delivers SQL queries to create high-quality data sets or data marts. The Senior BI Developer executes assigned data requests within scope, quality, and targeted timeline for delivery. As necessary the Senior BI Developer will identify and communicate data anomalies.
  • Strives for positive customer experiences as determined by project completion surveys and customer interviews. The Senior BI Develop demonstrates strong reliability and responsiveness by communicating internally and externally within 24 business hours.
  • Works closely with Compass Data Analyst for data requests where Compass Data Analyst leads customer engagement, scoping, and request documentation. For projects without an assigned Compass Data Analyst the Senior BI Developer will fulfill this role and communicate directly with clinicians or researchers.
  • Conducts accurate and timely documentation of project effort and status using the Compass case management system.
  • Schedules and coordinates meetings with faculty or study teams as necessary to discuss data requests.
  • Contributes to data delivery process optimization and organizational policy refinement.
  • May facilitate, process, and/or escalate user requirements for data and infrastructure in the Compass Google Cloud Platform, following organizational policies and procedures.
  • Supports the team by conducting code reviews, mentoring more junior BI Developers, and disseminating knowledge to peers.
  • Helps troubleshoot data quality concerns and helps validate novel data sources.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health science-related field (e.g., biostatistics, epidemiology, etc.) or technology (e.g., computer science, engineering, etc.), or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • At least four (4) years of professional-level experience in a healthcare-related environment working with enterprise data warehouses, including data profiling, data quality assessments, data analysis/reporting, data set curation, or equivalent experience.
  • At least two (2) years of SQL programming expertise.

PLEASE NOTE: Candidates will be responsible for travel expenses related to the interview process and any relocation expenses, if applicable.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Epic Certified in Caboodle Data Model, Clarity Data Model, and/or Clinical Data Model.
  • Master’s degree in a health science-related field (e.g., biostatistics, epidemiology, etc.) or technology (e.g., computer science, engineering, etc.), or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Advanced BI Developer skills.
  • Experience managing terminology mapping documentation, data profiling, and data mapping documentation.
  • Experience in standardized clinical code systems (e.g., SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm) and common data models (OMOP).
  • Experience with data manipulation languages (e.g., SAS, R, Python).
  • Experience working with secure web platforms for building and managing databases (e.g., REDCAP).

Competencies/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Experience working in an academic core service or support service.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • SQL skills for querying data (especially for cloud computing).
  • BI developer skills (e.g., Tableau reports, Power BI).
  • Experience working within HIPAA-compliant and other sensitive data environments.
  • Extensive experience with clinical data (e.g., Epic proficiencies or certifications).
  • Strong analytical skills, critical thinking, attention to detail and accuracy, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to support the development of BI dashboards and reports, and data analytic initiatives.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $76,126 to $96,831.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
