Job Summary - Director, Research Finance 

Provides operational direction and leadership for the financial activities of the Research and Grants Department to maintain compliance, achieve fiscal, patient satisfaction/utilization, and operational goals. Overall responsibility for the development, review, analysis and maintenance of all research and grant related financial reporting systems and policies. Reviews highly complicated financial and business-related information to interpret and prepare financial results and provide recommendations for appropriate course of action to senior leadership.

Essential Functions - Director, Research Finance 

  • Directs the establishment, review and maintenance of all research and related financial reporting systems and policies and centralizes all research and grant finance efforts/functionality and activities, including nursing, pertaining to Corewell Health.
  • Directs the activities of professional and support staff who are engaged in Grant Accounting and Federal Grants Audit. Also, directs financial support for Research Studies and Research Grant Accounting. Facilitates the training and continuing education of research and grants finance staff members. Provides direction and support to subordinate staff to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. Selects, trains, develops, and evaluates supervised staff and initiates personnel actions in accordance with departmental policies and organization philosophy.
  • Directs the analysis, classification, and review of highly complex financial and business-related analyses for research and grants in such areas as financial and expense performance, rate of return, depreciation, working capital, grant funding, and investment.
  • Develops and maintains systems to provide managerial reports to researchers and administration. Prepares interpretation of financial results and advises management of appropriate course of action.
  • Responsible for the development and supervision of research and grant specific budgets.
  • Responsible for the development and centralization of strong working relationships with research finance activities done collaboratively with outside organizations, or when research activities are done in conjunction with CH facilities.

Qualifications - Director, Research Finance 

  • Required Bachelor's Degree business administration with an accounting major
  • Preferred Master's Degree MBA or CPA designation
  • 10 years of relevant experience progressively more responsible finance reporting and planning/analysis required with a focus in the healthcare industry and research and grant activity or a large academic medical center. Required
  • Experience in an organization comparable in size and complexity. Required
  • Broad-based experience in all areas of finance including: financial planning, financial analysis, data reporting, and financial modeling. Required
  • Experience in research billing and NIH grant reporting/audits. Preferred
  • Experience including working knowledge of research and grants finance requirements, third party reimbursement, physician relations, community hospitals. Preferred
  • LIC-Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - STATE_MI State of Michigan preferred
