We are looking for a skilled person to join our R&D BioProcessing Fermentation team. The successful candidate will be responsible for day-to-day lab operations in the fermentation lab. This includes the preparation and sterilization of equipment and media, experimental design, SOP writing, monitoring fermentation processes, and cleaning and maintenance of fermentation systems. In addition, the Fermentation Engineer will be required to work outside of regular business hours, including weekends and after hours, to ensure the smooth operation of the fermentation processes.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Experimental design to evaluate feeding strategies, process parameters, new strains & medium & feedstock to improve product yield in lab and pilot scale bioreactors.
- Maintain detailed records of fermentation processes, including batch records and standard operating procedures.
- Troubleshoot issues that arise during fermentation processes and take appropriate corrective actions.
- Monitor fermentation processes, perform sampling and data analysis of fermentation products.
- Operate and maintain bench scale 5-10L and pilot fermentation systems up to 200L.
- Prepare and sterilize equipment and media required for fermentation processes.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of fermentation systems to ensure their proper function.
Experience, Skills & Knowledge:
- Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, biotechnology, microbiology, or a related field and 5-8 years’ experience or an advanced degree.
- Experience operating and maintaining bench and pilot fermentation systems.
- Understanding of basic microbiology and fermentation principles.
- Ability to perform routine laboratory analyses and maintain accurate records.
- Proven successful track record in developing fermentation processes and scale-up is a plus.
- Prior cGMP manufacturing experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry is preferred.
- Prior experience transferring technologies to third party manufacturing sites is a plus.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with aseptic techniques and BSL1 organisms.
- Excellent verbal, written, & scientific documentation skills.
- Ability to work onsite at our Nutley, NJ HQ 5 days a week, with some work outside of regular business hours, including weekends and after hours, to ensure the smooth operation of fermentation processes.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
