At the Stanford Center for Biomedical Research (BMIR) we develop cutting-edge methods to acquire, represent, and process information about human health. In order to handle the ever-increasing amount of data in healthcare and biomedical research, our faculty, students, and staff investigate and create novel computational, statistical, organizational, and decision-making methods. Our research advances the state of the art in semantic technology, biostatistics, and the modeling of biomedical systems to benefit clinical and translational research as well as patient care.

For this position, the successful candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing, and (with collaborating organizations) deploying and testing software for CEDAR, BioPortal, their collected software systems, and external project software, and contributing to the design of metadata and vocabulary specifications using BMIR software, as well as API specifications for interfacing BMIR and other system components. Desirable front-end expertise includes Java, Ruby, Javascript, and frameworks Angular and React. Desirable back-end expertise includes no-SQL databases and data systems, especially graph databases and triple stores; SQL and relational databases are a plus. Desirable model expertise includes RDF and other semantic standards, JSON and JSON-LD, and SPARQL SHEX, SHACL, and related query languages and specifications.

This individual will contribute to a collaborative environment with other organizations supporting projects like the RADx Data Hub, HUBMaP, and OntoPortal Alliance. The individual may interact as requested with data managers and researchers from external projects including Data Coordination Centers, and individuals at the National Institutes of Health. The individual must work closely with BMIR project members to achieve project objectives. Many of our project have high national or international visibility, and the successful candidate will apply agile development skills, strong engineering skills, good interpersonal communication, and mature judgment in a stimulating research environment to create successful outcomes.

Duties include:

  • Conceptualize design, implement, and develop solutions for complex system/programs independently. 
  • Work with a variety of users to gain information, and develop intra-system tradeoffs between different users, as necessary; interact with a diverse client base and outside vendor contacts.
  • Document system builds and application configurations; maintain and update documentation as needed.
  • Provide technical analysis, design, development, conversion, and implementation work. 
  • Work as a project leader, as needed, for projects of moderate complexity. 
  • Serve as a technical resource for applications.
  • Compare, evaluate, and implement new features and technologies, and integrate them into the computing environment.
  • Follow team software development methodology. 
  • Mentor lower level software developers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working collaboratively on research projects, preferably at a higher education institution. (Biomedical awareness a plus.).
  • Experience managing moderately complex open source projects with multiple stakeholders and customers.
  • Experience with metadata and/or semantic models and applications, including domain-specific vocabularies and metadata specifications.
  • Experience with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles and applications.
  • Experience architecting systems and/or defining system or application requirements.
  • Experience with front-end and back-end software design and implementation. Java, Javascript, Ruby, Angular, or React a plus. 
  • Experience with collaborative tools and processes such as Google Suite products, Slack, and Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Experience documenting technical solutions and presenting technical problems and solutions to diverse audiences.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.
  • Proficiency with application design and data modeling. 
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications. 
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.
  • Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects.
  • Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods. 
  • Knowledge of application domain. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. 
  • Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand. 
  • Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $98,000 to $144,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
