The mission of the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is to work with communities and partners to create an equitable, safe, resilient and Healthy Chicago. The disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Chicago neighborhoods has highlighted the need for the CDPH to address it using a health-equity based approach. As a part of the CDPH Disease Control Bureau, you will engage residents, communities, and partners in policies and services that prioritize residents and communities with the greatest need.

ROLE SUMMARY

As a member of the CDPH Disease Control Bureau’s Epidemiology Program, the Biostatistician oversees the activities of a data management and analytics team focused on enhancing disease surveillance and outbreak response capabilities in Chicago. This position will build epidemiologic and biostatistical capacity at CDPH by developing guidelines and standard approaches (e.g., data suppression practices, dataset deidentification procedures), acting as an expert consultant for study design and analytic methodologies (e.g., survey sampling and weighting, statistical analysis, mathematical modeling), and guiding data-driven decision-making across the Bureau.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Collaborates with informatics and information technology professionals on the development, maintenance, and quality of epidemiological, healthcare, and disease prevention databases. Designs data collection and management processes. Oversees the design and administration of surveys.

Data Analysis. Develops analytic design. Uses computer software programs to generate clear data summaries, tables, charts, and graphic displays and to perform statistical analysis. Applies mathematical and statistical methodologies to detect unusual patterns in disease occurrence and identify exposure-outcome associations. Evaluates program activities and conducts epidemiologic studies that inform public health interventions.

Data Sharing. Collaborates with federal and state public health agencies, local organizations, and universities to exchange information related to epidemiology, healthcare, and disease prevention. Represents the Bureau in collaboration with other City departments to create and maintain shared databases and informational platforms on health-related issues. Prepares presentations and reports to communicate findings from epidemiological analyses to diverse audiences, including members of the public and the scientific community. Recommends and implements data policies and quality standards.

Management. Supervises a team of programmers and GIS specialists. Provides guidance to team members across the Disease Control Bureau on mathematical and statistical concepts and methodologies. Identifies and provides training opportunities for staff. Supports grant writing and monitors grant deliverables and budget.
