FORENSIC FIREARM/TOOLMARK EXAMINER

Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners are responsible for examining and test firing firearms, performing serial number restoration, gunshot residue testing, examining ammunition components to determine if they share a common source, and maintaining laboratory equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

  • Perform examinations and comparisons of firearms, bullets, cartridge cases, shot shells, and other related items. 
  • Apply instrumental, physical and/or chemical techniques in the examination of firearm evidence. 
  • Examine items of evidence under a comparison microscope or stereo microscope for identifiable markings. 
  • Restore obliterated serial numbers and other weapon identification markings using various processes including acid etching and chemical methods. 
  • Perform distance determination and examination of gunshot patterns with test standards. 
  • Compare and evaluate positive forensic matches of evidence ensuring that any discrepancies are adequately explained and/or justified. 
  • Make microscopic comparisons and potentially identify striated and/or impressed toolmarks as having been made by the same tool. 
  • Analyze evidence toolmarks recovered from multiple crime scenes to determine if the scenes are related to a single tool. 
  • Prepare detailed and accurate reports. 
  • Interact and advise City, County, and State agencies on policy and processing of evidence.
  • Testify as an expert witness regarding forensic analysis explaining evidence identification criteria and substantiating examination findings. 
  • Ensure chain of evidence procedures and quality control standards are followed in firearm and evidence identification investigations.
  • Comply with unit performance measures and adhere to established Laboratory goals and objectives. 
  • Enter evidence and test fired cartridge cases into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), correlate data, and distribute results.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university in a natural science, chemistry, biology, physics, forensic science or a directly related field. 
  • Successful completion of a documented Firearm and Tool Mark Examiner training program equivalent to the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners’ (AFTE) Training Manual.
  • Two years of experience as a trained Firearm and Tool Mark Examiner working in a forensic laboratory. 

Disclaimer - "Accredited" means any nationally or regionally accredited college, university, or law school where the applicant is enrolled in or has completed an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Juris Doctorate degree program.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) certification.
  • Membership in the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners.
  • Technical Advisor, Quality Assurance, or Training Coordinator experience. 
  • ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) accreditation familiarity.

NOTE: Candidates must pass a background investigation, drug screen and other pre-employment procedures as determined by the Chicago Police Department.
