Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI) Data Librarian

Galter Health Sciences Library seeks an innovative and energetic data professional to join our team to support and advance research data management and sharing. The Data Librarian will join a strong and supportive team of collaborative data professionals in the Galter DataLab working on the Zenodo project through the National Institutes of Health’s Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI). The Data Librarian will provide focused support to the program through development and delivery of training, outreach, and use case support for the GREI program and provide curation and advisory services for research data management, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) Principles, and enhanced dissemination of training and research products. They will implement workflows to promote strong inclusive practices and collaborate on community and capacity building for the GREI through a mode of “coopetition” with collaborators from the other repositories taking part in GREI.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, minimum $70,000

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates in GREI collaborative activities, including working group meetings, frequent webinar collaboration, and other events and activities; Develops and delivers training and resources, policies, practices, and infrastructure for data management, citation, licensing, sharing, and preservation
  • Works collaboratively with the Galter DataLab team and GREI partners to support FAIR Practices
  • Works with data owners to understand challenges and opportunities related to data management, sharing, and reuse
  • Provides support for researchers and research teams on data organization and management strategies with the goal of improving data management skills, awareness of data policies, metadata, and data sharing/compliance
  • Collaborates with other community-wide educational efforts based on best data management practices aimed at promoting open, integrated, and rigorous practices in research and scholarly communication
  • Tracks federal and private funding agency requirements for data management, openness, and retention; stays current on trends and issues in the areas of data discoverability, reuse, and attribution
  • Contributes toward publications, conference presentations, posters, and other outputs
  • Performs other tasks and duties as assigned, relative to abilities and experience

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree in relevant field or experience with data management and/or curation; knowledge of standards and best practices, including FAIR and ethical data practices
  • Experience with documenting workflows and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multicultural, distributed, and collaborative environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with experience teaching or presenting in person and virtually using various media and technologies

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Broad knowledge of metadata formats and data exchange protocols and cataloging and metadata workflows and services
  • Experience working with specialized data cleaning software such as OpenRefine
  • Experience with one or more programing/statistical languages (e.g., Python) and prefer experience with semantic technologies and data indexing
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or direct experience working with or managing various data repositories including research data collections

The Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI), led by the National Institutes of Health Office of Data Science Strategy, currently includes seven generalist repositories that work together to establish a common set of cohesive and consistent capabilities, services, metrics, and social infrastructure across repositories, and facilitate the adoption of FAIR principles to better share and reuse data. This modernization of the data ecosystem aligns with the NIH Strategic Plan for Data Science and includes search and discovery of NIH-funded data in generalist repositories. Zenodo joins the GREI through a partnership between Northwestern University and CERN.
