About the role

The Digital Infrastructure department in STFC are responsible for the delivery of the enterprise Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure and services that underpin the STFC scientific programme of activities. The work that we do is key to protecting the organisations digital assets and is an enabler for the work of the scientific community here at STFC.

The Digital Infrastructure team provide a comprehensive network and communications environment to support the work of STFC and partner organisations. This includes a range of technologies and environments including Voice, Data, Email and unified communications.

Specifically, this role is to provide day to day support and maintenance of the network and communications environment as supported by DI, including fulfilling service requests, resolving incidents, supporting the service desk. You can expect opportunities to develop technical skills through increasingly autonomous projects whilst under the guidance and mentorship of senior team members. If you have an aptitude and desire to progress in your career with STFC, you can benefit from appropriate training opportunities and guidance for career enhancement. A progression path leading to Senior Network Engineer or indeed other roles within the organisation is anticipated. You may also be eligible for Degree Apprenticeship programmes after a qualifying period.

Key duties include:

  • Day-to-day responsibility for appropriate requests (tickets) for service at the direction of the Senior Network & Communications Engineer
  • Undertake minor installations or configurations within the area of both networking and telephony
  • Planning, installation, testing and maintenance of voice and data network connections.
  • Our teams are predominately based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) near Chilton in Oxfordshire and Daresbury Laboratory (DL) in Cheshire. This role can be based at either site and applicants should express a preference in their covering letter. There will be an occasional requirement to travel to other STFC sites.

About you

  • It is essential that you have 5 GCSE or equivalent qualifications including Maths and English
  • You will also have industry experience supporting a range of the following technologies:
  • IP routing and configuration of routes
  • network switches and configuration of switches
  • TCP/IP protocols
  • DNS/DCHP/Radius servers
  • video conferencing protocols
  • wired and wireless networking
  • firewalls
  • A relevant degree (or equivalent) would be desirable for this role but is not essential.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • 5 GCSE or equivalent qualifications including Maths and English. (S)

Desirable:

  • Relevant subject matter and industry experience (S)
  • ITIL Foundation. (S)

Knowledge and Experience

  • A working understanding of a range of network and communications functionality in an organisation providing various business systems
  • Experience supporting several of the following technologies:
  • IP routing and configuration of routers
  • Network switches and configuration of switches
  • TCP/IP protocols v4 & v6
  • DNS/DCHP/Radius servers
  • Wired and Wireless networking
  • Firewalls.

Desirable:

  • Telephony (Analogue, Digital and VOIP).

  • In depth knowledge of windows-based IT systems
  • Broad range of IT support skills, covering infrastructure, networking and application technologies
  • Ability to work using own initiative and be proactive
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision

  • Willingness to learn new techniques and technologies
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Quality of covering letter
  • Good, organised approach to complex problems
