About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a publicly-funded organisation that is responsible for supporting, co-ordinating and promoting research, innovation and skills development. Our uniqueness lies in the breadth of our remit and the sheer diversity of our portfolio, as we harness our world-leading expertise, facilities and resources to drive science and technology forward.

JASMIN is a globally-unique data analysis facility, providing storage and compute facilities to enable data-intensive environmental science. JASMIN provides a set of services that offer flexibility for a wide range of data-intensive analysis workflows, including several types of compute resource and petabytes of storage. JASMIN is designed, integrated and operated in collaboration between staff in the Centre for Environmental Analysis and the Scientific Computing Department at the Science & Technology Facilities Council (STFC), on behalf of the Natural Environment Research Council. The teams have expertise in systems administration, computer science, research software engineering and environmental informatics.

About the Role

An opportunity has arisen to join the team operating JASMIN – jasmin.ac.uk – a globally-unique data analysis facility that provides storage and compute facilities to enable data-intensive environmental science.

The JASMIN storage comprises several different technologies, each optimised for particular elements of workflows. These include a large capacity scale-out filesystem, near-line tape storage, a parallel filesystem for use in parallelised workflows, and a high-performance object store for use in the JASMIN cloud service. More details about JASMIN can be found at https://jasmin.ac.uk/.

Our users are innovative and demanding, often specialists in their field, and their workflows constantly evolving, so flexibility is required in order to support them in their work addressing some of the most important scientific challenges of our time. The role requires a pro-active approach producing high-quality, innovative technical work to tight deadlines, coupled with the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical colleagues and end users. The job-holder will report to the JASMIN Operations Manager but will also work as a member of the CEDA development team and will be required to work closely with colleagues in CEDA, the Scientific Computing Department and external stakeholders.

The role will include:

  • Managing the storage components of the JASMIN system, in close collaboration with storage technology experts in the Scientific Computing Division
  • Collating and assessing metrics from the JASMIN storage components to understand and help optimise performance and utilisation
  • Understanding user requirements for storage, and ensuring that solutions meet these requirements
  • Receiving and responding to user requests for support relating to JASMIN storage
  • Contributing to setting the future direction for development of JASMIN storage
  • Writing technical documentation and training materials for colleagues and the external user community
