STFC are advertising for a post-doctoral research assistant based at ISIS to work on a Horizon Europe project characterizing ammonia synthesis catalysts. The position is available from 1st January 2023 and will run for 2.5 years (30 months) on a fixed-term basis.

The position entails testing ammonia synthesis catalysts provided by our project partners, and designing experimental and analytical characterization procedures within the group of Prof Bill David. The position is part of the AMBHER project (https://ambherproject.eu), which looks to demonstrate short and long-term hydrogen storage options as part of a net-zero economy. Close collaboration with project partners to achieve milestones and deliverables is vital. As part of the role, therefore, the position-holder will attend project meetings within Europe and will be required to regularly present their work. The role is full-time, however requests for flexible working will be considered.

Job Responsibilities

  • To conduct testing and detailed characterization of ammonia synthesis catalysts.
  • To develop new experimental and analytical methods to determine mechanisms and structures of said catalysts.
  • To attend project meetings around Europe (every 6 months).
  • To present results internally and externally.
  • To write up results in such a form that they can be disseminated in peer-reviewed literature.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • PhD in chemistry or related discipline (applications will be considered where a PhD thesis has just been submitted) (S)
  • Experience working with both solid and gaseous, hazardous materials and knowledge of appropriate safety measures (S & I)
  • Experience using gas lines for conducting lab-scale experiments (S & I)
  • Experience in characterization techniques for solid-state materials (e.g. powder diffraction, thermal analysis and Raman spectroscopy) (S & I)
  • Excellent verbal communications skills and the ability to present scientific concepts simply and effectively (I)
  • Publication record consonant with career stage (S)
  • Quality of the cover letter in communicating candidate’s fulfilment of the selection criteria (S)

Desirable:

  • Experience in use of ammonia or hydrogen (S & I)
  • Experience in running experiments at beamline facilities such as Diamond and ISIS (S & I)
  • Experience in using a programming language (e.g. Python) for data analysis (S & I).
