PostDoctoral Research Associate

Princeton University

The Energy Systems Analysis Group (https://acee.princeton.edu/research/energy-systems-analysis-group/) at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment invites applications for postdoctoral researchers or more senior research positions. Individuals interested in systems-level analysis of challenges to deep decarbonization of the global economy by 2050 are encouraged to apply. Applicants will have a PhD or equivalent degree and experience in energy-climate modelling and analysis or a related field.

The individuals will join Rapid Switch (https://acee.princeton.edu/rapidswitch/), an international multi-disciplinary research collaboration that seeks to identify pathways to accelerate decarbonization of energy systems. The research to be conducted will build on Princeton's Net-Zero America study (https://netzeroamerica.princeton.edu/the-report). That study adopted a Rapid Switch framing and developed uniquely-granular sectoral, temporal, and spatial analyses to illustrate different pathways for the U.S. to transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Applicants should have experience in energy-technology assessment and energy-systems modeling, and a passion for practical decision support. Familiarity with optimization methods and algebraic modeling languages used for linear and mixed integer programming is desirable.

A successful candidate will join one or more energy system modeling research projects from among several that are ongoing, including, but not limited to, 1) sectoral case-study "deep dives" that model and map at fine resolution strategies for deploying technology and infrastructure; 2) techno-economic analyses and business-case assessments for different low-carbon energy systems, or 3) integrated assessment modeling that can generate robust and feasible emissions mitigation strategies. Candidates should indicate in their application which of these three topics most interests them.

A successful candidate will have strong, demonstrated research ability, enjoy working in multidisciplinary and collaborative research environments, and have excellent English written and spoken communication skills. This is highly collaborative research and may include senior colleagues within the Andlinger Center. The candidate will have enthusiasm for carrying out interdisciplinary energy-system decarbonization studies for the purpose of better informing policy and investment decision-making.

Applicants for more senior research positions will ideally have 4+ years of energy-systems analysis experience and a demonstrated record of effective project and team management, in addition to a PhD in chemical, mechanical, or electrical engineering, systems engineering, operations research, energy resources, computer science, or other relevant field.

We are interested in receiving applications from members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in science and engineering.

The appointment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year, based on performance and availability of funding.

Interested applicants should apply online at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/27581 and submit a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references.

These positions are subject to the University's background check policy.

Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
