The Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics is seeking a Chief of Service and General Obstetrics and Gynecology Division Director at Grady, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Emory University School of Medicine.

The Emory Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics provides full scope of obstetrics services for patients at Grady. Care is coordinated and provided for both routine and high-risk pregnancies and includes: antepartum fetal testing to assess fetal well-being, ultrasound, and obstetric related surgeries including Cesarean sections, forceps, vacuum deliveries, amniocentesis, and cerclage. Both faculty and resident are in-house for Labor and Delivery coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Inpatient services are also provided for the antepartum, postpartum, obstetric intensive care, and triage units. Finally, maternal-fetal-medicine subspecialists are available 24/7 and coordinate maternal transport service for high-risk patients from the region. Additionally, our service provides Nurse Midwifery services, both in the ambulatory setting at 4 of the Grady Neighborhood Health Centers and in the ambulatory clinics at Grady, as well as inpatient services on the labor and delivery, OB Triage, and postpartum units. The Nurse Midwives facilitates the group prenatal care Centering Program, as well.

Emory GYN/OB at Grady also provides a full spectrum of surgical and non-surgical services in all of the following areas: gynecology, family planning, gynecologic oncology, female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, and minimally invasive surgery. Non-surgical services include but are not limited to: the management of ovarian, cervical, uterine, and breast disease, contraception, screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and hormone replacement therapy. These sub-specialists are available to manage specialty patients and respond to emergencies such as surgical complications, ectopic pregnancies, complicated miscarriage, and emergent uterine bleeding issues 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our faculty provide both emergency department and inpatient consultation services as well. Emory GYN/OB at Grady consists of six divisions: 21 faculty, 10 fellows and 6 advanced practice providers.

The Department of has approximately 100 faculty, 50 trainees and 300+ staff across the five Emory Healthcare hospitals and the three affiliates – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), Atlanta VA Health Care System and Grady Health.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Chief of Service at Grady, Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics, Emory University School of Medicine

  • Coordinate clinical service activities with those of other organizational units and report to the Medical Executive Committee (MEC), board, administration, and nursing services for issues pertaining to or affecting the clinical service.
  • Assure that a robust physician performance improvement program (including OPPE/FPPE and Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QA/PI)) and Morbidity and Mortality is operative within the clinical service.
  • Assist with the credentialing and medical staff appointment process and ensure timely completion of medical records and support documentation improvement efforts.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with hospital clinical service managers and administrators (e.g. budgeting process, clinical service delivery and administrative processes).
  • Support GHS operational and clinical improvement initiatives.
  • Create a culture of continuous faculty recruitment, retention, development.
  • Foster a collegial environment that supports the successful recruitment, retention, and development of outstanding faculty and staff.
  • Define and communicate expectations for faculty members, providing them with the support they need to meet them, and review their performance in individual meetings at least annually using the Career Development Conference Report. Understand the University promotion and tenure process and its requirements and mentor faculty members—or arrange mentoring—accordingly.
  • Assign clinical, administrative, educational, service, and research roles to the faculty in ways that promote the division and department while bearing responsibility for Divisional productivity and academic performance.
  • Foster excellent communication, teamwork, and cooperation in carrying out the scholarly, educational and clinical missions of the Division and the Department.
  • Provide adequate Divisional infrastructure for faculty and staff to carry out their responsibilities.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned: work on Quality goals collaboratively with Morehouse Department of OBGYN at Grady.

Division Director, General OB/GYN at Grady

  • Represent Emory’s Division of General OB/GYN at Grady and Emory’s surgical specialties on the Executive OR Committee and follow through/complete appropriate tasks as assigned.
  • Provide oversight and share best practices among other surgical service chiefs (surgery, otolaryngology, urology).
  • Participate in Grady initiatives such as Care Logistics, representing all surgical services from the Perioperative perspective.
  • Demonstrate leadership and facilitate interpersonal relationships among surgeon chiefs and other chiefs of services at Grady.
  • Assist in preparation of the quarterly Peri-operative services meetings to improve quality of care for patients requiring operative services.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned: Chair of the GHS mortality committee.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates must have a terminal degree (MD or DO), successfully completed a 4-year ACGME-accredited obstetrics and gynecology residency program and be Board Eligible or Board Certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Minimum of four years of leadership experience as well as a minimum of eight years of experience. Licensure by the Georgia Composite Medical Board will be required prior to commencement of employment. Demonstrated leadership skills necessary to complement and expand the existing clinical and academic programs. 

Additional Qualifications include:

The Chief must be wise, seasoned, judicious, and principled, must be able to make sound decisions about resources, direction, individuals, and risks within a strategic view of the Department’s opportunities and challenges, and must be able to work collaboratively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students and with colleagues who may be close at hand or may be widely distributed across the enterprise.

The Chief will be effective at developing people and be able to manage a large and complex portfolio of issues and rapidly assess situations with multiple outcomes and consequences. They will be a flexible problem-solver with the ability to create or influence win-win outcomes.

The Chief must be able to anticipate challenges, seek and interpret relevant information, and make recommendations and decisions, and must be able to learn continuously in this arena and to share knowledge and insight generously with colleagues. They should be entrepreneurial leader who can form alignment around the pursuit of important goals or the response to substantial challenges; in this regard, the Chief will apply strong organizational, leadership, and management skills to be an effective agent of change in ways that enhance the Department and organization’s reputation, expand or conserve its resources, and advance its programs. In all, the Chief should act on the basis of a deep interest in and commitment to the mission of the Department and organization.

The Chief should be a trusted counselor to the Chair and to the Department’s senior leadership and a trusted partner to the leadership of the Emory at Grady Dean’s Office, Grady Health System and Morehouse School of Medicine. They should be committed to working with the Chair to build a workplace culture that is capable of executing change to meet business objectives.
