About the Role:
Optus are currently expanding our fleet of geostationary communications satellites with the procurement of several new spacecraft opening the opportunity for new technical roles who will be directly involved in the ground projects to make these satellites operational.
The Satellite Support team provides the spacecraft engineering, performance analysis, orbit dynamics, networks and systems support for fleet operations, including those relevant to this role:
- Design and implementation of the Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) systems used for 24x7 on-orbit operations.
- System administration and upgrade of multiple mission-critical COTS and in-house software products.
- Network management, systems monitoring, and problem resolution.
Based at our Satellite Earth Station in Belrose, you will be a part of the Satellite Support team providing technical support for software applications for all phases of the spacecraft mission across the spacecraft engineering, orbit dynamics and satellite control areas.
The Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) systems, computer hardware and software, and network systems, that will be vital to control these new spacecrafts, must be designed, integrated, tested, and deployed ready for operation. This is an exciting position as you will be involved with the enhancement, expansion, and upgrade of the existing software environment to upgrade current systems, incorporate the software systems required to provide operations of the next generation spacecraft.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Satellite Support, you will become an expert in a range of software systems associated with the Optus and Customer Owned TT&C environment. Having a wide variety of operational systems, platforms and third-party packages used by the software systems you will have the ability to work in an environment requiring detailed knowledge of multiple systems, as well as an in-depth understanding of the functionality for these systems necessary to troubleshoot and resolve application or infrastructure issues
This is an exciting position on a permanent full-time basis, however as a Senior Engineer, TT&C Software Systems you will be flexible in providing an occasional out of hours support for critical system issues and events on an as needed basis.
Key responsibilities:
The Senior Engineer will be involved in support of the initial development and operation of the TT&C Software Systems and supporting the current systems used by the Satellite Support team. Parts of the role include:
- Configuring, setup and integration of versions of current software systems for new spacecraft and new software systems into the operational and development environment.
- Support the development environment during testing, integration and training to prepare for operation of new spacecraft. Support operational deployment of software for new and existing spacecraft.
- Support the upgrade of existing systems for new versions, operating systems patching and hardware upgrades
- Provide ongoing second-tier support for current operating systems including maintenance, user support, problem fixing, development of additional operational capabilities and configuration control of modifications
- Provide first and second level system support, resolving technical queries, and communicating solutions directly to customers.
- Apply support skills and technical knowledge to triage, diagnose, troubleshoot, and escalate or resolve user system issues..
- Provide advanced application support to effectively utilize the system infrastructure and resources. Provide application support to programmers and developers.
- Perform analysis of existing application protocols and software tools. Design and develop new applications that support system operation and spacecraft operations. Research, implement and test new developments required for the project including new hardware, operating system, and functionality.
- Perform monitoring and fault finding of the software system and where possible provide resolution, otherwise escalate to the Principal Technical Specialist Systems Support to appropriate internal experts or the system vendor as appropriate. Ensure all faults are followed through until completion
About You:
- A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related degree with a high level of software systems related content
- 2-3 years’ experience working in an operational environment in which mission critical software application support and development of tools was a focus.
- Hands-on experience working in an applications production support/application development environment.
- Experience in the Linux Operating system, Windows Operating System along with requirements of application support for a real-time software system
- Solid experience scripting and programming for application support and standard operation environment, such as using Python, Perl, C++, TCL, PowerShell, and Unix shell;
- Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills & the ability to work within a team environment to complete software design tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills, Strong written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to provide excellent user support.
- Ability to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance.
