Hitachi Energy is seeking a GIS Data Engineer for its Broomfield, Colorado location as well as other remote locations throughout the United States per the manager's discretion. Help us fuel the products that power decision-making across the energy industry. Your role will span the breadth of geospatial data processing and analysis, exposing you to every aspect of energy-related data. The GIS Data Engineer role supports multiple products in the Enterprise Software group, providing data and insights to a broad spectrum of clients. In this role, you will work with your scrum team to ensure complete, high-quality data in the Velocity Suite and Energy Market Intelligence (EMI products). You will be responsible for helping build and maintain data pipelines, drive innovation and insights. The ideal candidate will have strong background in managing, manipulating, and delivering geospatial data. You can bridge business requirements with our geospatial data and translate it into process design. You are enthusiastic about revamping older GIS processes and building new commercial delivery mechanisms. This requires someone strong technically but also an effective collaborator. You will lead other GIS Energy Market Data Developers in modernizing our geoprocessing work-flows. You will help us to increase the impact of our GIS data to support our clients in making decisions across Energy Markets.
Your responsibilities
- Prototype, design, build, and test production geospatial data pipelines, tools and associated software systems. Build self-monitoring, robust, scalable batch and streaming data pipelines for 24/7 global operations with highly re-usable code modules and packages that can be leveraged across the data pipeline.
- Design and own the implementation of a data management architecture to optimize storage, security and web rendering/publishing of vector and raster data in a spatial database.
- Modernize, overhaul, design, develop, and support server-based and file-based geoprocessing scripts, tools, and processes for both automated and manual data updates. Willingness to understand and improve upon existing processes (primarily MapInfo and MapBasic based).
- Support strategic thinking and processes related to infrastructure, geospatial data pipelines, software development and deployment
- Maintenance and creation of GIS web mapping services, locator services, and geoprocessing services to support a variety of applications and API needs
- Maintain high data quality and integrity across our systems by designing QA/QC processes of data pipelines
- Integrate with diverse APIs supporting internal and external customers
- Modernize internal GIS dataset development and digitization processes for our key datasets to increase speed, de-crease complexity and to support ongoing dataset development across multiple analysts. Add ability to check in and check out specific data features and include audit process.
- Drive geospatial analytics to derive new data and insights for our client base
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders including (developers, analysts, DevOps engineers, data engineers and clients)
- Facilitate knowledge sharing by creating and maintaining detailed and comprehensive documentation and diagrams
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement new technologies to improve geoprocessing and meet business requirements
- Strong team player with a high degree of self-motivation
Your background
- Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Master's degree in Geography, Computer Science, GIS, Environmental Science or a related field and 5 + years of experience with current GIS technology (Esri (ArcGIS), MapInfo, QGIS) using editing tools, performing spatial analysis, creating geodatabases and utilizing web services
- Ideal candidate’s schooling has a focus on geographic concepts and principals along with
- experience in design, building and testing geospatial data solutions that are complex or large-scale working as a GIS Developer/Data Engineer or in a related technical role
- Proficiency in data modelling and relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, and/or PostgreSQL)
- Experience with geospatial analytics
- Proven experience (GitHub repo or real-life examples) in working with geospatial data integration and theoretical knowledge of the geospatial problem domain.
- Knowledge of cloud computing concepts and environments (Microsoft Azure or AWS)
- Experience using Esri’s ArcPy, Python API libraries, Pandas, and/or other modules to write custom scripts, geopro-cessing tools and ETL workflows. Strong experience in automation and data wrangling
- Team player with outstanding communication, presentation, and collaboration skills

- Experience with the following are a plus:

- Writing complex, highly optimized queries across large data sets using T-SQL, PL/SQL, Postgres, MySQL, or something similar
- MapInfo, MapBasic, and/or Velocity Suite
- ArcGIS Enterprise web applications or other web application development
- Understanding of ArcGIS/QGIS/MapInfo from an IT context (e.g., hardware, software, storage, security, networking, servers, databases, web services, virtualization, cloud computing)
