Random House Children’s Books is growing and adding an Editor to our Make Me a World imprint team! Reporting to an Executive Editor, and working closely with MMAW founder, Christopher Myers, you will work with Christopher to acquire and edit 4-6 MMAW titles a year and will also have an opportunity to edit select titles for the Knopf list.

Make Me a World is an imprint at Random House Children’s Books with a focus on books by writers from a wide, global range of backgrounds and experiences, curated by acclaimed artist and writer Christopher Myers. Make Me a World is dedicated to exploring the vast possibilities of contemporary childhood. We make books where the children of today can see themselves and each other.

Make Me a World’s first list debuted in Fall 2019 and has already garnered numerous honors and starred reviews. Publications include Home Is Not a Country by Safia Elhillo; My First Day by Phùng Nguyên Quang and Huynh Kim Liên and Pet by Akwaeke Emezi. Our authors and illustrators have roots all over the world, including: Sudanese by way of DC, Japanese-American from Hawai’i, African American, and Vietnamese. 

Responsibilities

  • Acquire and edit 4-6 MMAW titles a year in conjunction with Christopher Myers, for all ages of children’s literature, including picture book, middle grade, and young adult.
  • Liaise between Christopher Myers and the team at RHCB to find the right projects for the imprint and work closely with our art, marketing, publicity, sales, and subsidiary rights departments throughout the publishing process to bring the books to market. 
  • Collaborate on additional editorial projects for the Knopf team.
  • Develop and maintain author and agent relationships including scouting new talent, negotiating acquisitions, and liaising with authors and agents.
  • Maintain publishing/production schedules and meet deadlines.
  • Participate in editorial meetings and present titles at sales meetings and elsewhere as required.
  • Keep abreast of the field at large (read trade journals and competitors' books; be aware of trends in publishing and children’s media so as to keep list up-to-date with the marketplace’s needs and demands).

Requirements

  • Demonstrates an interest in working on BIPOC titles
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment; the Editor will work closely with Christopher Myers to acquire titles and curate the list
  • Previous structural and line-editing experience in children’s book publishing, preferably across Young Adult, middle grade, and picture books
  • Prior knowledge of the children’s marketplace; experience in both picture books and older fiction a plus. 
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish relationships with authors across desired industries, as well as with literary agents
  • Experience in negotiation and managing books through the editorial/production process
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task across several projects concurrently, and demonstrates strong attention to detail and follow-up while ushering books from idea to reality 
  • Strong written, problem-solving and presentation skills
