Research Project Description:
The Center for Interacting Urban Networks (CITIES) at NYUAD is inviting applications for a Post-Doctoral Associate to join CITIES and work in urban science studies under the guidance of a faculty associated with the center led by Prof. Monica Menendez.
This position is designed for students from a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to student with a B.S. in: any Engineering discipline, Urban science, Data Science, Architecture, and Urban Planning, Computer and Data Science, Systems Science, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.
The applicant will work in a uniquely multidisciplinary environment consisting of 9 NYUAD faculty and 9 collaborators within NYUAD global network, several post-docs, graduate students and undergraduate students, and a large network of international world renewed collaborators. CITIES is an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to advance urban science and promote cutting-edge research that leads to tangible improvements fostering sustainable, resilient, and equitable cities with particular focus on the UAE and Abu Dhabi. To that end, CITIES leverages the expertise of faculty members from the four divisions of NYUAD. CITIES researchers work synergistically to establish a vibrant and globally recognized knowledge hub for urban networks, to bridge the gap between scientific significance and practical value, and to further develop the human capital that will propel the city of Abu Dhabi and the UAE into a richer and more sustainable future.
Urban science is a new worldwide emerging interdisciplinary field that uses a computational and data driven understanding of city systems to evaluate how they work, grow, and evolve. Its main goal is to find solutions for some of the most pressing challenges that humanity faces such as displacement, economic inequality, health threats, and the climate crisis. All in all, urban science uses a holistic scientific approach to making cities more habitable, resilient, and sustainable.
Applicants can apply for a broad range of urban science opportunities that covers NYUAD four division, including, but not limited to, multimodal mobility systems, traffic flow dynamics, supply chain management, AI (development of AI based decision support tools), Urban Dynamics (use of social media data to develop methods for monitoring urban activity), Smart Urban Infrastructure (design of innovative building materials). Applicants are encouraged to discuss their research interests with the center leadership to fine tune the details of their research project.
