Candidate will be part of the optical interface platform team responsible for the design, development, and testing of micro-optic solutions that enable Juniper’s opto-ASIC products. Candidate will lead the optomechanical design of components, as well as their assembly into precision-aligned micro-optic subsystems.
The successful candidate will work cross-functionally with optical designers, process engineers, layout engineers, test engineers, and component vendors, to design, develop, and validate current and next-generation optical interfaces used in Juniper’s Silicon Photonic integration platform.
Responsibilities
- Comprehensive stewardship of the optomechanical design, development, and validation of micro-optic subsystems that meet product specifications
- Generate component and subassembly CAD drawings, complete with specifications, in collaboration with optical design and product engineers
- Work closely with a test-engineer or directly perform characterization of micro-optic materials and subsystems in the lab
- Understand, operate, and improve pick-and-place and vision systems used in the precision alignment and assembly of micro-optic subsystems
- Design, develop, and validate tooling used in micro-optic subsystem assembly machines and characterization setups
- Communicate with and discover new micro-optic component vendors
- Use custom built and commercial simulation tools, such as ray tracing, to model optomechanical performance
- Work closely with PIC and system architects to validate optomechanical performance versus specifications
- Perform component and subsystem failure analysis in collaboration with optical engineers and vendors
Skills & Preferred Experience
- Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Material Science, Applied Physics, or related discipline (or M. Sc. with industry experience)
- 5+ years of relevant professional experience
- In-depth understanding of pick-and-place machines and computer vision
- Understanding of optical systems and single-mode waveguide optical coupling
- Understanding of integrated photonics and semiconductor processing
- Proficiency with CAD software
- Proficiency with scripting languages (preferably Python)
- Proficiency with optical design & simulation tools (Zemax, Fred, etc.)
- Strong problem solving, communication, organizational, interpersonal, and presentation skills
