AT MARTIN HORN, WE LIKE TO TELL IT LIKE IT IS. SO, HERE’S WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
IN YOUR CAREER
At Martin Horn, you’ll be learning from talented, smart people at a company you can feel proud to work for. You will have the ability to work on interesting and innovative landmarks and historic projects. You will also be building during a time of dynamic growth in the city of Charlottesville. When you work at Martin Horn, you have opportunities to gain knowledge and grow your skills on and off site. We put a lot of trust in our employees and give them ownership over their projects. This is a place where you can grow, learn, and create a long-lasting career that fits you.
THE DAY TO DAY
In terms of actual day-to-day duties, we’ve made that simple, too—we’ve included Project Manager Employee Performance Review Packet (shorturl.at/hrsuF), the same document we’ll use when you get your annual review each March. You’ll always know how your performance is evaluated—because we tell you from the start.
WHO YOU’LL BE WORKING FOR
COMPANY
Martin Horn began in 1947 as Edward van Laer Construction. The company was re-named Martin Horn in 1979, when Jack Horn Sr. formed a partnership with the president of Edward van Laer, Warren Martin. That first year, the company did $700,000 in construction. Now, nearly 40 years later, that number has grown to $50 million annually. Jack and Warren successfully built a company founded in the values of integrity, quality, and hard work. Sadly, Warren passed away in 1992. In 2002, Jack Sr. became Martin Horn’s Chairman of the Board, and his sons Jack, Doug, and Ted now run day-to-day operations. In the words of Jack Horn, “If business can involve friends and family, then that’s about as good as it gets.”
WHO YOU’LL BE REPORTING TO
Josh Horton, Director of Project Management- Josh’s favorite aspect of construction is that it’s all about interacting with others. He enjoys making and maintaining relationships with the people he is working with on a project. Known for his consistency, Josh exceeds project expectations. Outside of Martin Horn, he is always busy, whether that is taking care of his two young daughters with his wife or working, clearing or building on his 40 acres of land at home.
Ted Horn, CEO - Ted Horn grew up working at Martin Horn. He has held many different positions within in the company and now is primarily in charge of marketing and business development. This position allows Ted to be at the beginning and end of a job talking with the owner and making sure client expectations are managed and exceeded. He is a graduate of Lynchburg College in Managerial Economics. Ted has served on several nonprofit boards and was recently president of the Rotary Club of Charlottesville. Ted has LEED accreditation and headed up the Martin Horn LEED EB team.
WHERE YOU’LL BE WORKING (AND LIVING)
We are in Charlottesville, Virginia, a place we call home. You will have the opportunity to work on impactful projects that are known throughout the community. When asked, “Why Charlottesville? Why Martin Horn?” the most common answer is that having a part in the growth of the city and getting to drive by your projects every day is extremely rewarding. When you work with Martin Horn, you are not just a cog in the machine. You are known throughout the Charlottesville community as the people who have helped make the city what it is today and build its future.
Charlottesville also has a thriving local community filled with culture, amazing food, and endless activities (even in socially distant times). You can go from the downtown area, to being surrounded by nature in just 20 minutes. Living in a college town, you will also be surrounded by vibrant young adults starting their careers just like you.
You get to have the small-town feel, with the resources of larger cities. It really is the best of both worlds.

WHAT OUR CULTURE IS LIKE
COMMUNITY FOCUSED
Whether it’s sending crews to areas of the world stricken with natural disasters or a local under-served children’s center, we build more than just the buildings of our clients. And with our annual giving over 20% of our total net profits, giving back is a major cornerstone of our entire operation.
EMPLOYEE LOYALTY AND SATISFACTION
