At Raytheon Technologies (RTX), we are defining the future of aerospace and defense with ambitious technologies that push the limits of known science. Our technologies help our customers take on the world's biggest challenges. Together we are advancing research and development in both the defense and commercial aerospace sectors.

The Whole Life Engineering Directorate (WLE) is responsible for ensuring our products are Safe, Reliable, Maintainable, and delivered on time. WLE consists of multiple disciplines that support engineering, our program offices and our customers. Our WLE disciplines participate in the total life cycle of our products from conception to deactivation. Our focus area is product support, which includes the following disciplines: reliability, system safety, and supportability.

Do you actively seek out problems to solve?

Do you love helping people or teams? If your answer is an enthusiastic “Yes!” then you may be the person we want to join our team as a System Safety Engineer (SSE).

The System Safety Engineering Department is seeking candidates for a Senior System Safety Engineer II position. Entry-to-mid level engineers will work under the direction and mentoring of senior Safety Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and their Engineering Leadership in handling System Safety Engineering tasks as members of the System Safety Engineering Department.

System Safety Engineering ensures our Raytheon Technologies (RTX) products safely perform their required mission functions throughout their required lifecycle environments, while also meeting overall cost and schedule constraints. This position supports programs specifically by working with experienced System Safety practitioners and missile engineering personnel to ensure that our products are designed with safety in mind.

What are the hazards in our products and what are all the energetics (explosives, gas vessels, lasers, springs, lithium batteries, etc.) contained within them? Do we have all the data and information needed to develop a safety assessment and support U.S. Government Safety Review Board approval? SSE answers these questions on a daily basis.

So what does a SSE do? They analyze engineering drawings, Bill of Materials (BOM), procedures, and work instructions to identify hazards; as well as safety significant components, subsystems, and interfaces (to include software, firmware, hardware, procedures and supporting training). The SSE develops and submits safety data to the proper safety approval authorities and archives the documents and supporting data within an internal document management system. The SSE are responsible for interacting with the Program Management, Engineering, EHS, and government approval authorities from program startup operations, until safety approvals are obtained, through Production and demilitarization and disposal activities. The SSE requires a high degree of self-motivation and effective ability to interface with co-workers across all RMS product lines, Engineering, Operations and Supply Chain Management.
