The North Warning System (NWS) is a joint Canada and United States radar system that includes 47 sites spanning the Arctic from Labrador to the Alaskan border. The NWS provides the capability to detect airborne threats across North America’s polar region, providing a command and control capability to the Canadian Air Defence Sector (CADS) of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).

Raytheon provides Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services for the NWS including full care, custody, and control of the entire system and its components. This includes the radar sites, five logistics support sites (LSSs), a monitoring and control center, and a repair depot. Key activities include maintenance and repair of radar and electronic systems, power generation, and facilities; logistics support; and remote monitoring and control.

Raytheon NWS is currently seeking a Software Developer / Engineer who will be responsible for design, implementation, testing, release and documentation of software products. The Software Developer will work on product development of new designs and modification of existing software on various platforms to meet schedule and defined baseline requirements. Provides technical support during field execution, including review of change orders. This is a contract position until March 31st, 2022, with the possibility of an extension.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute software development for NWS equipment; including real time Radar systems, Automated Test Equipment (ATE), Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and/or other commercial off the shelf (COTS) systems.
  • Develop software requirement specifications, designs, acceptance test plans, installation instructions, and release notes.
  • Analyze hardware systems for compatibility and requirements in regards to software development or COTS applications.
  • Prepare and execute software upgrades on online systems.
  • Provide technical support during implementation phase of projects.
  • Inspect software development for quality assurance (peer review).
  • Provide technical support for engineering and maintenance operations, including software failure analysis.
  • Occasional travel to remote areas of Canada’s Arctic to perform on-site engineering investigations required.
  • Performing other duties as assigned, which are unplanned or transient in nature.

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or College Diploma in Computer Programming with at least 2 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in a variety of software languages and environments.
  • Self-motivated and highly organized to keep track of multiple projects and adapt in a fast paced environment.
  • Excellent oral/written communications with the ability to present and explain technical information in English to both engineers and non-technical staff.

Desired Skills/Knowledge

  • Proficient in multiple languages (C/C++/C#, VB.net, Python, etc)
  • Experience developing and delivering systems within multiple operating system environments (UNIX/Linux/Windows).
  • Experience with product testing, code reviews and software collaboration.
  • Experience with database driven systems (SQL or Microsoft SQL server)
  • Experience collaborating with hardware development teams.
  • Familiarity with software version control systems (GIT, Subversion or CVS).
  • FPGA HDL experience in Verilog or VHDL.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity and an understanding of work in the Canadian Arctic.
