Collins Aerospace is currently seeking qualified candidates for a software lead position, who can lead a software team across a number of key software lifecycle development activities, including the design, development and the integration testing of mission systems software. The candidate should have demonstrated strong leadership skills, be self-motivated, and able to work in a fast paced environment as part of a dynamic software development team. The candidate must be able to work in cross-functional teams, and possess strong communication skills. Additionally, the candidate should be experienced with common software engineering tools and practices and earned value management.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of product domain and systems across Business Unit.
  • Plan, assign, and track assignments for software team.
  • Track and report earned value for software execution.
  • Serves as a software architect to capture, analyze, decompose, translate and create requirements for systems of high complexity including clean sheet designs. Collaborate with cross functional team to develop functional, interface and performance specifications for software implementation. Identify and document architecturally significant requirements and technical risk areas. Drive understanding of competitive offerings, technology roadmaps, customer needs and product improvement.
  • Mentors product development teams in utilization of the appropriate Collins Aerospace processes and tools during all stages of development.
  • Capable to lead and develop engineering estimates for Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) and Bid proposals, using applicable enterprise estimation tools, for multiple component systems involving interaction of software in multiple system deliverables.
  • Capable to serve as software lead in integration, verification and validation for products and sub-systems of high complexity including clean sheet designs.
  • Mentors teams on the design, coding, testing, integration and documentation of complex software. Drives needed changes to internal processes and tools for software development to increase productivity or quality.
  • Responsible for technical details of software designs, ensuring they meet the expectations of the customer.
  • Capable to lead or review technical proposal preparations and participate as a subject matter expert in internal peer and design reviews, non-advocate, and customer reviews. Assure that development products are designed to meet the applicable Collins Aerospace, Business Unit, and Customer/Project requirements.
  • Develop and/or utilize prognostic metrics to drive efficient software design & development. Review metrics and software performance trends, identify systemic root causes and process improvements, and recommend new approaches, tools, techniques that drive continuous improvements in software development processes.
  • Considered an expert on company, industry practices and standards. Be aware of emerging industry trends relative to operating systems, processors, modeling, simulation and development platforms. Lead Continuous Improvement projects that result in new approaches and techniques to product development. Identify gaps in technical knowledge, create training to close gaps.
  • Able to communicate complicated and detailed technical topics to a wide range of audiences and be able to tailor the message appropriately.

Basic Qualifications 

Candidates must have the following experience:

  • US Citizenship
  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret Clearance. 
  • This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 7 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 5 years of relevant experience. In the absence of a degree, 11 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Well disciplined in software engineering processes and methodologies
  • Well disciplined in configuration management practices
  • Experience of leading a multi-disciplined software development team
  • Experience in all software lifecycle disciplines including design, implementation, and test
  • Experience of planning and scheduling software development activities
  • Experience of presenting to and communicating with customers and management
  • Proficient with earned value tracking and reporting methods
  • Demonstrated commitment to software quality including software peer reviews
  • Experience with industry standard software development tools (such as Subversion, Enterprise Architect, GDB, or equivalents)

The following experience is desirable:

  • Experience with requirements capture, decomposition, and traceability
  • Prior experience of developing software in high level languages such as C, C++, or Java
  • Prior experience with real time embedded programming
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems engineering
  • Familiarity with object oriented design and UML modeling
  • Strong background in software development lifecycle models and processes for department of
  • defense contracts
  • Experience working on software for military applications and/or experience of working
  • government program

Some domestic travel may be required.

Preference will be given to those candidates who meet the needed skills and experience set and that

currently hold or are able to obtain a U.S. DoD security clearance. The position requires US Citizenship.
