Operational Support Engineer

Disney Streaming

Job Summary:

Disney Streaming Services is a place for the creative and the bold. We’re seeking talent across disciplines to join our team in New York City.

Core Engineering is a horizontal service team providing both tools and guidance across the organization for operations in AWS. We strive to act as a productivity multiplier, providing consulting, operational support and staff augmentation to Application teams to help them to drive their adoption of AWS services in conjunction with their existing infrastructure. We work closely with those groups to offer a "cloud-native" perspective on application architecture, infrastructure, and deployment strategies.

An Operational Support Engineer on the Core Engineering team is responsible for monitoring and working to resolution any operational issues reported with Core Engineering-provided tooling, such as Docker, Jenkins, Logstash, Elasticache and Kibana, and custom tools/services etc. in our AWS platform. This position will report to the Technical Program Manager, and will interact with the Technical Solutions Engineers (TSE), for additional reach-out and guidance to Application teams on an as-needed basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Do you enjoy working with different AWS services, and diving into details on how they interact with each other?
  • Do you have passion for improving the security of the cloud, without ‘getting in the way’ of teams ability to deliver?
  • Do you have great ideas on how to manage AWS security at scale, across multiple teams and services?
  • Are you excited about helping Application teams to develop and deliver great products like ESPN+ and Disney+ to our customers ?

In this role, you’ll be providing guidance and managing security permissions for our internal Development teams with a particular focus on AWS Security.

You’ll have to negotiate with these teams, to find workable compromises, but you’ll be able to discuss these requests and collaborate with the rest of the Core Engineering team, to help to find a workable solution.

You’ll also be helping us to improve our own internal Security-management tooling.

This position will require some familiarity with other DevOps tools such as CloudFormation, Jenkins, Github and Puppet, as you will be asked to assist with other support questions as needed as well.

Above all, here are the qualities that we are looking for in a great candidate:

You can find ways to turn “maybe” into “yes”

You are interested in helping our teams to move forward with their development work.

If you are interested in learning and growing your skills, we would love to help you to achieve those goals, while you help us to support our Application teams.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years ‘ experience supporting or working in DevOps teams
  • You’re practical and personable, with an ability to communicate with engineers.
  • You are keen to continue to learn about various AWS Services, and how App teams are using them.
  • You have hands-on AWS Security/IAM administration experience, particularly IAM Policies, in support of multiple teams.
  • We work with external partners, and with Cloud and Datacenter services, so familiarity with SSL Certificate management, VPC networking, Security Groups/Firewalling and DNS would be useful.
  • Experience with AWS services, such as EC2, ELB, ECS, ACM, IAM and CloudFormation.
  • Experience with DevOps tools such as CloudFormation, Jenkins, Github, Puppet (or similar)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS Certification.
  • You have had to work with teams in regulated environments such as PCI or HIPAA
  • Windows Server experience. (We are a Linux environment, but there’s always a ‘special snowflake’ application somewhere)
