POSITION SUMMARY
Director BioDevice Software (SW), Controls & Electrical Engineering (EE) is a key position in the design and advancement of BioDevice for the global animal health industry.
The Director, BioDevice SW, Controls & EE will lead a team of engineers in software, controls and electrical engineering development activities in support of bio-devices, integrating all software, controls and electrical design to components such as electro-mechanical and pneumatic motion systems, optical sensing and analysis, signal processing, pick-and-place robotics and fluid dispense mechanisms. This position will report to the Sr Director R&D, BioDevices & Automation and will manage a team of senior level engineers.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops software and electrical requirements and specifications with a limited set of customer requirements and limited guidance to meet changing market demands and customer needs. Follow or optimize existing development processes to reflect best practices. Modify and create engineering documentation standards aligning with industry best practices related to development, commissioning, testing and deployment of automation, control systems and instrumentation solutions.
- Develops or optimizes data architecture design and debugging processes through understanding of machine control, data management, computer networking, and embedded PC hardware.
- Develop software, controls and electrical needed for proof-of-concept of electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, communications and controls hardware for use in research or development of automated systems
- Manage a teaCode and debug embedded controllers and computers
- Knowledge to mentor and manage teams to excel in troubleshooting hardware-software integrations with remote sensing and control systems
- Team members perform trial runs of in house lab tests and to the field installed equipment to verify functionality of control systems
- Evaluate and recommend control devices such as but not limited to embedded Linux PCs or SBCs, operator interfaces, optical sensors, pneumatics, wireless communications, etc.
- Updates and applies best practices Software Development LifeCycle methodology to integrate with our BioDevice Product Development Model.
- Coordination and management of team members across a matrixed multi-product organization.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer sciences, or Computer Engineering, or candidate with Mechanical Engineering degree or related technical field and a concentration in software development will also be considered.
- Minimum of 15 years post-bachelor’s experience relevant to this position.
- 10 years minimum experience in the management of electrical design teams.
- Technical understanding of the animal health industry and experience in an ISO or regulated industry is preferred.
- Demonstrated new product development experience from concept through commercialization.
- Knowledge and practical application of current and emerging engineering science and cutting edge technologies.
- Excellent leadership, management and interpersonal skills.
TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrated proficiency in C/C++
- Demonstrated experience with embedded Linux or embedded RTOS development is desirable
- Demonstrated experienced with embedded software development and hands-on hardware development skills preferred
- Experience developing in JavaScript / HTML / CSS / JQuery is desirable
- Demonstrated proficiency in Linux shell scripting, server configuration and package management
- Demonstrated proficiency in TCP/IP networking with the ability to setup, configure and troubleshoot issues with IPV4 networks
- PLC Programming & industrial automation control systems including field buses (Modbus/TCP, Ethercat, Ethernet/IP)
- Experience with optics and optical signal processing
- Experience with circuit design and board layout is desired
- Experience in LabView programming would also be a plus
- Experience in CE compliance and IEC standards
- Demonstrated experience using Agile development techniques and using a Software Development Life Cycle and working with continuous improvements initiatives
- Enthusiasm to promote and drive implementation of Zoetis’s industry leading approach to leveraging software technologies to enhance all aspects of our devices around the world
- Demonstrated experience in critical thinking and problem-solving skills, planning and organizing, decision-making
- Excellent communication skills, influencing and leading, facilitation and team work capabilities
- Remain current with new and cross industry technologies and practices, as well as evolving external requirements that impact product design, execution, analysis and reporting.
PHYSICAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Candidate will work mostly at the Durham site either in an office environment or a development lab environment. Some travel to customer facilities is occasionally required.
- Usual office working conditions approximately 75%, with remaining work involving poultry hatchery or lab environment around electro-mechanical and biological/chemical hazards.
- Travel generally about 20%, but can vary, depending upon stage of product development.
