Manager, Machine Learning - People Analytics

Reporting to: Director, People Analytics

About the Role

We are seeking a Machine Learning Engineer (Manager) to join our People Analytics Team. The People Analytics team’s mission is to use data to help make smart People decisions and make WeWork the best place to work. Data underlies decisions related to hiring, promotions, compensation, engagement, development, careers, attrition, benefits, diversity, and the culture at the heart of WeWork.

We are looking for an expert in machine learning to help us extract value from our data. In this role, you will lead all the processes from data collection, cleaning, and preprocessing, to training models and deploying them to production.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about machine learning algorithms, artificial intelligence and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field.

Some of the projects you’ll be tackling includes Organizational Network Analysis & Employee Churn Prediction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify organizational problems and develop hypotheses as to causes and relationships.
  • Apply robust research methodologies, technical tools, and leading analytical techniques to evaluate data related to people and business questions. 
  • Analyze the ML algorithms that could be used to solve a given problem and rank them by their success probability
  • Define validation strategies
  • Define data augmentation pipelines
  • Train models and tune their hyperparameters
  • Translate findings into succinct, actionable insights, typically in coordination with partners who help you develop a holistic framework.
  • Deploy models to production
  • Develop a network of outside practitioners and consultants to stay abreast of innovative approaches and solutions to people challenges.
  • Manage available resources such as hardware, data, and personnel so that deadlines are met
  • Verify data quality, and/or ensure it via data cleaning
  • Supervise the data acquisition process if more data is needed

Key Experience & Competencies

You are comfortable in a fast-paced environment and capable of juggling multiple initiatives simultaneously, often against short time constraints. You flex and re-prioritize to adjust to changing business conditions. You have strong collaboration skills but also the confidence and ability to work autonomously. You are an excellent communicator, able to consult with and present insights in a concise and effective manner.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or related field and 5+ years of experience
  • Proficiency with Python and basic libraries for machine learning such as scikit-learn and pandas
  • Proficiency with a deep learning framework such as TensorFlow or Keras
  • Fast learner with deep curiosity who asks questions, wants to learn new methods and approaches, and seeks better ways of doing things.
  • Expertise in visualizing and manipulating big datasets
  • Familiarity with Linux
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience conducting quantitative research in an organization or consulting environment.
  • Progressive thinker with a flexible, can-do, team-oriented approach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or related field and 2+ years of experience with data manipulation and analysis
  • Experience with multilingual NLP systems
  • Expert familiarity with of a variety of classic and modern machine learning techniques including deep learning, clustering, decision trees, classification, regression and neural networks.
  • Solid background in algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented programming
  • Experience with deploying machine learning-based systems in production environments
  • Knowledge of mining complex data (including structure and unstructured), identifying patterns, and feature engineering.
