Job Title: Material Handler

Job Description

As a Material Handler, you will be responsible for pulling customer orders based on invoices and tickets. You will assist the burn table operator in pulling product for orders and be involved in bending, kneeling, and walking throughout the day to move products. You'll use large cranes to move substantial steel orders and reorganize materials in monkey racks. You will also load and unload trucks and assist customers with their orders.

Responsibilities

  • Pull customer orders based on invoices and tickets.
  • Assist burn table operators in pulling products for orders.
  • Move around in monkey racks to reorganize material and stock.
  • Use large cranes to move substantial steel orders.
  • Utilize the color system to organize raw material based on steel thickness.
  • Load and unload trucks and assist customers with their orders.
  • Engage in daily communication with management about orders and materials.
  • Prioritize tasks with a focus on pulling orders and customer service.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in warehouse operations, picking, and material handling.
  • Skill in loading, general labor, and machine operation.
  • Proficiency in using tape measures and overhead cranes.
  • Forklift operation skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to see all colors.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with micrometers and calipers.
  • Experience in labor-intensive work such as carpentry, construction, or mechanical work for 1+ years.
  • Longevity in positions, with 2+ years in each role.
  • Experience in military, building maintenance, or handling product variations and measurements.

Work Environment

Work in a large warehouse environment with loud and dirty conditions due to the nature of the product. The facility experiences a lot of distractions due to customer interactions and order processing. The work involves using overhead cranes to move heavy steel products and working in various temperature conditions—hot in summers and cold in winters. The first shift runs from 7:30 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday, with a late first shift from 9:30 am to 8 pm, Monday to Thursday. The team consists of 15-20 members and specializes in different product areas, with tasks mostly independent. Dress code requires jeans, steel-toed boots, and work-appropriate attire for safety.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
