Position Summary
The Architect, Software Engineering is a senior technical individual contributor responsible for defining, guiding, and governing software architecture for mission-critical enterprise SaaS products. This role partners with engineering, product, security, DevOps, QA, and architecture stakeholders to design scalable, secure, reliable, and maintainable solutions across Java, .NET, web, API, data, and cloud technologies. The architect will also promote AI-native software engineering practices, including responsible use of LLMs and AI-assisted development tools to improve design quality, developer productivity, code review, testing, documentation, and modernization efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture Strategy and Governance
- Define and evolve solution architecture for enterprise SaaS applications, including cloud-hosted and hybrid deployment models.
- Provide architectural direction for product areas, ensuring alignment with enterprise architecture principles, security standards, scalability needs, and long-term product strategy.
- Contribute to Architecture Review Board activities and help establish practical architecture standards, patterns, and guardrails.
- Make or recommend key technical decisions, including technology selection, integration patterns, modernization approach, and build-versus-buy options.
Solution Design and Technical Leadership
- Architect end-to-end solutions using technologies such as Java/J2EE, .NET, REST and SOAP APIs, Angular or React, microservices, relational databases, messaging, caching, and cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
- Review technical designs and critical implementation approaches to ensure they are secure, scalable, maintainable, testable, and aligned with the approved architecture.
- Guide engineering teams on complex design problems, performance bottlenecks, reliability risks, integration challenges, and production-critical issues.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership through prototypes, proof-of-concepts, design reviews, code reviews for critical areas, and architecture documentation.
Engineering Excellence and Modernization
- Drive best practices for modular architecture, API design, secure coding, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, performance engineering, and operational readiness.
- Partner with DevOps and engineering teams to support automated build, test, deployment, and release practices for enterprise SaaS products.
- Identify and guide modernization opportunities across legacy components, platform capabilities, frameworks, databases, and deployment architecture.
- Ensure architecture supports performance, scalability, reliability, localization, maintainability, and customer-specific enterprise requirements.
AI-Native Software Engineering
- Promote responsible use of Agentic software development and testing frameworks like OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and similar tools within secure development practices.
- Use Agentic Development Tools where appropriate to accelerate architecture research, design alternatives, code generation support, test case ideation, documentation, troubleshooting, and developer productivity.
- Provide guidance on safe and compliant AI usage, including protection of confidential information, validation of AI-generated outputs, security review, and code quality expectations.
- Stay current with emerging AI agent tools and Agentic software engineering practices and assess where they can improve product engineering outcomes.
Collaboration and Influence
- Collaborate with product managers, engineering managers, senior engineers, QA, DevOps, security, and support teams to translate business needs into effective technical solutions.
- Influence technical direction across teams without relying on direct reporting authority.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Mentor senior engineers and technical leads to improve architecture maturity and engineering capability across the organization.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
- 12+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building mission-critical, high-performance, web-based enterprise applications, including at least 3 years in an architect or principal engineer role.
- Strong object-oriented design, coding, troubleshooting, and debugging skills.
- Deep understanding of multi-tier web application architecture, distributed systems, SaaS, PaaS, cloud-native architecture, and high-scale enterprise application design.
