Job Description

The DevSecOps Engineer designs, builds, and manages the infrastructure foundations of modern software factory environments in support of critical defense programs. This role focuses on infrastructure-as-code, Kubernetes automation, and GitOps delivery practices, working hands-on with containerization, CI/CD pipelines, and secure multi-cloud environments while implementing Department of Defense (DoD) hardening standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain infrastructure using Terraform and infrastructure-as-code practices to support secure, scalable software factory environments.
  • Author Dockerfiles and deploy containerized workloads to Kubernetes clusters using Helm, ensuring reliability and security across environments.
  • Implement and manage GitOps workflows and automated cluster configuration management to enable consistent, auditable deployments.
  • Harden Kubernetes clusters and base container images in alignment with DoD guidance, including STIG and Iron Bank standards.
  • Support networking, policy enforcement, and secrets management within secure multi-cloud environments to maintain compliance and operational integrity.
  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure and platform issues, identify root causes, and implement effective solutions independently.
  • Administer and maintain Linux-based systems in production environments, ensuring stability, performance, and security.
  • Collaborate closely with development and security teams to ensure seamless CI/CD pipeline operations and secure delivery practices.
  • Apply policy-as-code concepts and tools, where applicable, to enforce security and compliance across infrastructure and applications.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of DevSecOps practices, tooling, and automation to enhance delivery speed and system resilience.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience with containerization technologies and Kubernetes orchestration.
  • Practical experience using Terraform and infrastructure-as-code methodologies to build and manage cloud or hybrid environments.
  • Experience with Helm for packaging and deploying applications to Kubernetes clusters.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, with GitLab preferred, including build, test, and deployment automation.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex infrastructure and platform issues.
  • Ability to work as a self-starter and operate independently while managing priorities and delivering results.
  • Familiarity with administering Linux systems in production environments.
  • Experience with RHEL or RHEL-based Linux distributions.
  • Experience using Git for version control and collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with Renovate for dependency management and automation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Renovate for automating dependency updates across repositories.
  • Familiarity with DoD Security Requirements Guide (SRG) and related compliance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with the DoD DevSecOps Reference Guide and its recommended practices.
  • Familiarity with Windows server administration and automation in mixed operating system environments.
  • Hands-on experience with FluxCD or similar GitOps tools for declarative infrastructure and application management.
  • Experience with policy-as-code frameworks such as Open Policy Agent (OPA).
  • Understanding of DoD Cloud SRG and container hardening practices, including secure image baselines and cluster configurations.
  • Interest in supporting innovative defense-related programs and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) initiatives.
  • Appreciation for working within a strong, collaborative culture that values innovation and robust benefits.

Work Environment

This role is based on site at Redstone Arsenal, working in an integrated environment alongside a prime contractor to support a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project. The position operates within secure, defense-focused facilities that emphasize collaboration, adherence to DoD security and compliance standards, and close coordination with engineering and security teams. The work involves modern DevSecOps tooling such as Kubernetes, Terraform, GitLab, Helm, FluxCD, and policy-as-code frameworks, in a setting that values innovation, startup-like agility, and a strong culture. Dress and daily routines align with a professional defense installation environment, with on-site presence and engagement in mission-focused activities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Huntsville, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $160000.00/yr.
