Job Title: Machine Operator – 2nd Shift

Job Description

This role operates production machinery on the 2nd shift to safely and efficiently manufacture products that meet customer specifications. You will start up and monitor machines, perform visual inspections, and ensure all finished rolls are correctly labeled and packed according to documented requirements. The position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to work at an accelerated pace, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and orderly work environment by following all safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Start up, operate, and shut down production machines in accordance with established operating procedures.
  • Monitor machines during production runs to ensure consistent quality and output.
  • Perform regular visual inspections of products and respond promptly to any issues or irregularities identified.
  • Adjust machine settings during production runs to maintain product quality and address operational problems.
  • Properly label all rolls produced, ensuring accuracy and traceability for each product.
  • Review packing specifications by accessing and interpreting information in the computer system to ensure customer requirements are met.
  • Verify that all packing specifications are followed, including labeling, measurements, and packaging details.
  • Read and follow production tickets to understand job requirements, quantities, and specifications.
  • Use measuring tape and other instruments to verify product dimensions and ensure they meet specified tolerances.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding production status, issues, and improvement opportunities.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying and suggesting process enhancements.
  • Perform general labor tasks related to machine operation and production as needed.
  • Complete other duties as assigned to support production and operational goals.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent and/or 1–2 years of relevant experience or a forklift certification.
  • Hands-on experience with machine operation in a production or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret production tickets and related documentation.
  • Ability to work at an accelerated pace while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations and use measuring tape or other measuring instruments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to access and review information in a computer system.
  • Dedication to continuous improvement and willingness to follow and enhance standard work processes.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to bend, stretch, or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Reliability and strong attention to detail in a production setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with extrusion processes or similar production environments.
  • Experience in general labor within manufacturing or industrial settings.
  • Forklift certification, where applicable, as an alternative or complement to experience.
  • Familiarity with labeling and packaging standards in a manufacturing environment.
  • Comfort working with computerized production and packing specifications.

Work Environment

This position is on the 2nd shift, working Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The facility is clean and well lit, providing a comfortable and safe environment for machine operation and production work. You will work around extrusion and other production machinery, using computers to review packing specifications and production information. The role requires standing for extended periods, regular bending and stretching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Standard industrial attire and appropriate safety gear are expected to ensure a safe working environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.50/hr.
