Job Description Summary:

As a Principal Engineer – Frontend on the Marketplace Item Setup team, you will be at the center of building and evolving the user-facing systems and experiences that empower sellers and internal teams to list, manage, and publish millions of items across Walmart's global e-commerce platforms. You will work at the intersection of user experience, engineering excellence, and business impact — architecting micro-frontend systems, design system components, and BFF (Backend for Frontend) layers that serve global markets at scale.

You will set the technical direction for frontend engineering on the team, mentor senior and staff engineers, collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Platform partners, and influence frontend engineering standards across Walmart's Global Tech organization. This is a high-impact role for a seasoned frontend engineer who is passionate about crafting world-class web experiences and thrives on solving complex architectural challenges at scale

About Team:

The Marketplace Item Setup team is responsible for the foundational systems that manage the complete lifecycle of items and offers on Walmart's global e-commerce marketplace — serving global markets at massive scale. From item ingestion and enrichment to attribute validation and offer publishing, our platform processes millions of catalog events every day — enabling sellers and internal teams to list, update, and manage products across multiple markets and geographies.

We are a fast-paced engineering team working at the forefront of Walmart's global growth strategy. We build and operate distributed, cloud-native systems using modern Java stacks, event streaming (Kafka), Azure cloud services (including Azure Cosmos DB), and Walmart's cloud-native infrastructure (WCNP). We are deeply invested in engineering excellence, platform reliability, and developer productivity.

What you'll do:

  • Architect and deliver scalable frontend platforms – Lead the end-to-end design and implementation of high-performance, accessible React/TypeScript applications and micro-frontend systems powering item setup, listing management, and offer publishing workflows across global markets.
  • Drive frontend technical strategy and engineering standards – Define and champion frontend architectural patterns, coding standards, and best practices; conduct design and code reviews, guide ADRs (Architecture Decision Records), and influence platform-level frontend decisions across the Global Marketplace engineering organization.
  • Own web performance, accessibility, and quality – Establish and enforce performance budgets (Core Web Vitals, Lighthouse scores), ensure WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility compliance, and drive a culture of quality through robust automated testing strategies (Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress).
  • Mentor and grow engineering talent – Coach senior and staff frontend engineers through pair programming, code reviews, and design discussions; champion a culture of technical rigor, ownership, and continuous learning within the team.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver business outcomes – Partner closely with Product Management, UX/Design, Backend Engineering, and global market stakeholders to translate complex business and user requirements into robust, maintainable, and delightful frontend experiences.

What you'll bring:

  • Deep frontend engineering expertise – 12+ years of software engineering experience with strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, and CSS3; solid understanding of component-based architecture, state management (Redux, Zustand, or equivalent), and modern build tooling (Webpack, Vite).
  • Micro-frontend and Node.js BFF experience – Hands-on experience designing and operating micro-frontend architectures at scale; proficiency in building Node.js-based Backend for Frontend (BFF) layers and consuming GraphQL and REST APIs to power rich, data-intensive UI workflows.
  • Web performance and accessibility mastery – Proven track record of optimizing web applications for Core Web Vitals, reducing bundle sizes, implementing lazy loading, and achieving and maintaining WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards across complex enterprise applications.
  • Cloud-native delivery and DevOps mindset – Experience deploying and operating frontend applications on Kubernetes-based platforms (WCNP or equivalent); familiarity with Azure CDN and Akamai for static asset delivery, CI/CD pipelines (Looper/Concord), feature flagging, and A/B testing infrastructure.
  • Principal-level leadership and communication skills – Proven track record of leading frontend technical roadmaps, building and evangelizing design systems and shared component libraries, influencing without authority across teams, and mentoring engineers to accelerate their growth.
