Are you a strategic environmental, health, and safety leader who thrives in complex, mission-critical operations? As Manager, EH&S Substation Operations, you will play a highly visible leadership role shaping environmental performance across essential utility infrastructure. You will lead environmental programs, remediation initiatives, spill response, and a skilled team of professionals to ensure regulatory excellence, strengthen operational resilience, and advance a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. Core Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate environmental programs, remediation initiatives, spill response activities, and field resources to ensure strong compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company standards.
- Provide visible, hands-on leadership to the workforce by setting priorities, directing critical work, and ensuring activities are executed safely, efficiently, and with operational excellence.
- Partner with leaders across operations and EH&S to assess risk, address business needs, and implement practical programs and solutions that strengthen environmental performance and protect employees.
- Oversee substation inspections and compliance activities to help ensure adherence to regulatory obligations and company expectations across a complex operational footprint.
- Identify and champion innovative opportunities to improve efficiency, increase productivity, and reduce cost while maintaining a strong focus on safety and compliance.
- Provide environmental and safety expertise on engineering designs, equipment installations, and capital projects to support sound decision-making and regulatory alignment from planning through execution.
- Maintain emergency readiness and provide leadership during 24/7 response situations, ensuring timely, effective environmental and safety actions when critical issues arise.
- Direct EH&S remediation projects from planning through completion, ensuring timely execution, strong oversight, and full regulatory compliance.
- Track, analyze, and drive resolution of substation spill activity to minimize environmental impact, reduce risk, and improve long-term performance.
- Serve as a key liaison with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, building credibility and supporting the organizations environmental goals and compliance commitments.
- Take on additional leadership responsibilities and related assignments as needed to support departmental priorities and operational objectives.
Required Education/Experience
- High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of 10 years' work experience in Environmental, Health, & Safety or Substation Operations or
- Associate's Degree and a minimum of 5 years' work experience in Environmental, Health, & Safety or Substation Operations and
- Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 3 years work experience in Environmental, Health, & Safety or Substation Operations
Preferred Education/Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Sustainability and 3 years of relevant experience in the Environmental, Health, & Safety field and/or Electric/Substation Operations
Relevant Work Experience
- Demonstrated strong commitment to excellence and understanding the vital importance of personal accountability, required.
- Ability to develop concepts into successful safety and environmental programs, required.
- Ability to effectively interact with customers, support staff, regulatory agencies, and various levels of management, required.
- 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience and knowledge of administrative procedures, required.
- General knowledge of major environmental, health and safety laws and regulations as well as experience working with regulatory agencies, required.
- Ability to respond to the field for Emergencies, Job Site Safety Evaluations, required.
- Medical clearance for respirator fit test for Half Face/Full Face/ SCBA respirators, required.
- Familiarity with the Incident Command Structure, required.
- 3 to 5 years of EH&S or Substation related work experience, required.

- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
- Perform work in underground vaults through manholes
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be available to work off-hours as required
- Must be available to work in all Con Edison locations
- Must be willing and able to respond to emergencies as needed
