We're looking for a Junior Software Engineer to join our development team in Krakow. You'll play a key role in building products that improve the experience of millions of Guidewire customers worldwide, while learning from specialists who have a shared commitment to push further and achieve more.

Job Description

Driven by integrity and motivated by the collective challenge.

At Guidewire, we're changing the face of insurance. Developing and delivering technology that's crafting the future of the property and casualty industry. We're a global team of more than 2,400 working at scale and speed across a 500-million-dollar platform that gives insurers the tools they need to take care of their customers. Individually mastering our craft, to collectively empower millions.

Guidewire Cloud Platform

You will join one of the teams building the Guidewire Cloud Platform, which enables our customers to develop and deploy Guidewire Insurance Platform solutions to the cloud — similar to deploying applications on AWS. Under the hood, the platform is built on AWS, utilizing Kubernetes and Terraform for scalability and efficiency.

Tech Stack

Our teams develop components for the Cloud Platform as autonomous microservices, primarily using a Java stack (Java 17+ and Spring Boot) supported by AWS-native services. Our microservice architecture runs on Kubernetes within AWS, managing and storing mission-critical configuration and reference data.

Our teams take ownership of all aspects of the software development lifecycle for their services, including architecture, coding, quality assurance, infrastructure, and deployment/upgrade strategies. We embrace agile methodologies to promote collaboration and efficiency across our projects.

The Role

As a Junior Software Engineer, you will contribute to small and medium-sized user stories with guidance from more senior engineers on the team. You'll be supported through code reviews, pair programming, and team ceremonies as you grow into delivering work independently. You can expect to:

  • Contribute code to existing designs within an established service.
  • Request and act on feedback from code reviews to improve your craft.
  • Participate in design reviews for the features you're working on.
  • Solve well-defined, straightforward problems and learn from how the team tackles harder ones.
  • Follow the team's operational runbooks to help resolve production issues, and start capturing useful metrics for the features you build.
  • Participate in the team's ceremonies, onboarding of new hires, and rotations such as internal support duty.
  • Follow established release processes for production deployments.

This role requires in-office attendance for 10 days per month (specifically, the last week of the month, Monday through Thursday, and for the remaining weeks, Tuesday and Wednesday).

What We're Looking For

  • Strong foundation in algorithms and data structures, with up to 2 years of relevant programming experience (recent graduates welcome).
  • Proficiency in Java or another programming language, with a willingness to quickly learn Java.
  • Familiarity with object-oriented design and a desire to learn engineering best practices through code reviews, pair programming, and team mentoring.
  • Solid problem-solving skills and a sense of ownership over the work you pick up.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical ideas in an English-speaking environment and ask for help when you need it.
  • Eagerness to learn — you're excited to grow into Guidewire's stack, our cloud platform, and modern engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace AI and apply it to your current role as well as data-driven insights to drive innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to Test-Driven Development (TDD), Clean Code practices, or pair programming through coursework, internships, or open-source contributions.
  • Exposure to or interest in microservices architecture.
  • Familiarity with the Spring ecosystem (Core, Boot, Data, etc.).
  • Experience using public cloud providers, preferably AWS (including EKS, DynamoDB, IAM, SQS, S3, etc.).
  • Awareness of Kubernetes, Docker, or other cloud-native technologies.
  • Comfort using AI coding assistants and a curiosity for applying AI and data-driven insights to improve your productivity.
  • At Guidewire, we foster a culture of curiosity, innovation, and responsible use of AI—empowering our teams to continuously leverage emerging technologies and data-driven insights to enhance productivity and outcomes.
