Job Summary

The Operating Room (OR) Operations Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the daily Operating Room schedule of cases to include posting of cases and assisting with staff assignments. The OR Operations Coordinator assists Charge nurse with staff needs. They anticipate, identify, communicate, and resolves needs of patients and personnel to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the Operating Room schedule within the guidelines of the OR standards, and hospital policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

Ensure provision of quality patient care in accordance with established standards

Assist Charge nurse with assigning staff and coordinate the posting of all surgical procedures.

Coordinate patient needs, staff responsibilities, and surgeon requests as they relate to the running of the OR schedule and functions

Ensure that cases are pulled and prepared, instruments and equipment are available, and everything is in working order.

Collect information and communicate needed changes for preference card updates or revisions

Communicate effectively with physicians, staff, and the Nursing Administration

Enhance continuity of patient care by coordinating the assignments of the Operating Room stay (inpatient, outpatient, and SDA)

Assure that appropriate, effective inter/intra-shift communications are maintained

Inform the Nurse Manager and Director of scheduled activity and alert them of potential problems, training, and equipment needs of the staff.

Alerts Educator of training and education needs of staff.

Collaborate with Anesthesia Board Runner to plan for daily operations.

Coordinate and communicate all schedule issues and concerns with the appropriate team members, to include surgeons, anesthesia, and surgical team.

Maintain responsibility for the decision-making regarding prioritizing OR emergency/urgent cases.

Participate in the collection and coordination of data for the OR computer system and the monitoring of block booking guidelines and utilization

Assist Charge nurse with analyzing workload of assigned unit to determine the employees needed to ensure adequate staffing.

Requests on-call staff come in when there is a need

Remain alert and responsible to situations for modeling, creating, and articulating theoretical-philosophical ethics of caring with staff and colleagues

Develop skills of caring behaviors, caring presence in formal and informal relationships with individuals and groups

Promote and support research on caring and health/healing outcomes

Implement and evaluate experimental/demonstrational models of caring-healing theory guided practices

Explore relationships between and among data which document connections between caring theory guided practice models, nurse retention, patient-nurse satisfaction, healing outcomes, and costs

Consult with and keep Nurse Managers informed of unit activities, needs, and problems

Make immediate administrative decisions as necessary in the absence of Manager and/or Director.

Collaborate with the Nurse Managers and Director to make recommendations for changes and the identification of areas requiring staff development.

Assist Educator with the orientation of new staff and provide support to all students affiliating with the hospital

Initiate quality improvement/risk management activities independently and as directed

Establish and maintain a collaborative relationship with the off-tour supervisor to foster problem-solving activities

Monitor department to ensure complete compliance with established department, unit, and hospital policies and procedures, accrediting agency requirements, as well as objectives regarding quality assurance, safety, and environmental and infection control; interpret these policies, procedures, and objectives to subordinate personnel, patients, medical staff, and the public as appropriate.

Document and submit follow-up of problem solving to the Nurse Manager involving various complaints related to Surgical Services clinical activities, serious incidents, and violations of the Service Excellence Standards and Expectations

Attend required hospital-wide orientations, staff meetings, meetings, and in-services

Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

All other duties as assigned

Reporting Structure

Reports to: Operating Room Nurse Manager and Perioperative Services Director

Supervises: Charge Nurse and staff assigned to shift

Core Responsibility

Education

Minimum Required Education: Successful completion of a Registered Nursing program

Preferred Education: BSN

Experience

Four years as a RN with a minimum of two years in surgical services role, supervisory/charge experience preferred; applicants must have a strong working knowledge of equipment used in the Operating Room, including how to safely utilize and maintain the electrosurgical unit, various light sources, scopes, sterilizers, surgical tables, etc.

Licensure and Certifications

Applicant must hold a current license to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or compact state. Additionally, applicant must currently hold and maintain BLS and CPR certification; preferred applicants will hold and maintain a current ACLS certification.

3 years:

experience in the operating room
