Introduction

A career in IBM Software means you’ll be part of a team that transforms our customers’ challenges into solutions. Seeking new possibilities and always staying curious, we are dedicated to creating AI-powered, cloud-native software that helps organizations manage and execute strategy at scale.

We are seeking a QA Engineer specializing in test automation who combines strong testing fundamentals with an engineering mindset and a willingness to continuously improve how quality is achieved.

IBM’s product and technology landscape includes Research, Software, and Infrastructure. Entering this domain positions you at the heart of IBM, where growth and innovation thrive.

Your role and responsibilities

As a key member of our engineering team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and maintainability of Targetprocess, an enterprise-grade Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) product. You will own the team-level test strategy, balancing manual and automated testing, and driving high-quality delivery through scalable end-to-end functional and regression automation.

You will collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and other QA engineers to embed quality throughout the software development lifecycle, while aligning your team’s approach with broader product quality strategy.

In this role you will:

  • Own and continuously evolve the test strategy within your team (scope, coverage goals, regression approach, risk-based prioritization, release readiness), aligned with the overall product quality strategy.
  • Design, implement, and maintain end-to-end automated tests covering critical user flows and regression scenarios across a React frontend and TypeScript /.NET backend.
  • Apply a hybrid QA approach, combining exploratory/manual testing with automation, and making informed decisions about what to automate and when.
  • Build and maintain reliable, readable, and maintainable automation using modern web testing frameworks (currently Cypress and Playwright), while remaining open to experimenting with and evolving tooling and approaches as the product and technology landscape changes.
  • Integrate automated tests into GitHub-based CI pipelines, ensuring fast feedback, clear reporting, and actionable diagnostics for failures.
  • Track test scenarios, execution status, and quality signals using TestRail, supporting transparency and release decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the team on acceptance criteria, definition of done, and testability concerns, helping to raise the overall quality bar.
  • Work effectively with containerized environments, understanding how deployments, environments, and test stability interact.

Required education

Bachelor's Degree

Required technical and professional expertise

  • Test Strategy Ownership (Team Scope):
  • Experience defining and owning a pragmatic test strategy for a development team, including test coverage goals, regression scope, release criteria, and risk-based testing.
  • Hybrid QA Execution:
  • Comfortable combining exploratory/manual testing with automation, and evolving coverage over time based on risk, value, and product maturity.
  • End-to-End Test Automation:
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining end-to-end functional and regression automation for modern web applications using contemporary test frameworks.
  • Modern Web & Services Testing:
  • Solid understanding of testing across a modern stack (React UI + TypeScript /.NET services), including test design, stable test data, and environment dependencies.
  • CI/CD & Engineering Practices:
  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI pipelines (GitHub), working with version control, and treating test code with the same care as production code.
  • Test Management & Quality Reporting:
  • Experience using tools such as TestRail to manage test scenarios, track execution, and communicate quality status clearly.
  • Collaboration & Quality Advocacy:
  • Ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams and advocate for quality through clear communication and shared ownership.

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Evolving Test Tooling & Practices:
  • Interest and experience in experimenting with new testing tools, frameworks, or techniques, and evolving the test approach as the product and organization grow.
  • Container-Aware Testing:
  • Familiarity with testing in Kubernetes-based environments and understanding how infrastructure affects test reliability and execution.
  • Enterprise / SaaS Experience:
  • Experience working on enterprise-grade or SaaS products where stability, backward compatibility, and user experience are critical.
