What's the role?

In the role of a Lead Software Engineer you will drive the backend development of HERE WeGo Pro. The backend is a critical part our the application, necessary to manage user onboarding, usage metering, feature entitlements and configuration. It also powers our live tracking functionality. Customers integrate our APIs so they can automate their operations. You will work on expanding the capabilities of the backend so we can better integrate with our customers' fleet management systems. This is a role that requires not only solid technical skills, but also the ability to influence without authority and to foster a positive and collaborative team culture. Further in this tole you will:

• Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs using Kotlin and Spring Boot
• Own end-to-end delivery of backend features from design to production deployment
• Implement and maintain integrations with external services (HERE Platform, AWS, third-party APIs)
• Write clean, testable, and well-documented code following established patterns, and ensuring security best practices
• Own our technical documentation and API spec, and help improve the overall product documentation
• Contribute to an established codebase owned by another team, ensuring all work aligns with existing architecture, coding standards, and development practices.
• Work directly with product management, and all the members of the cross functional team (engineering, design, QA...)
• Make pragmatic technical decisions and move fast without sacrificing quality, optimizing for the maximum leverage (value vs effort)
• Respond to customer support requests and help with customer onboarding
• Ensure a positive and collaborative team culture

Who are you?

You are an experienced engineer with deep expertise in building back-end systems who can work independently in complex situations as well as lead others to solve challenging problems and find innovative solutions.In addition you have:

• A bachelor's degree in computer science or related stream.
• 8 to 12 years of backend development experience with 2+ years in a technical leadership role
• Strong proficiency in JVM based languages preferrably Kotlin.
• Operated backend services at scale (10K+ daily active users or equivalent)
• Experienced with AWS, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, PostgreSQL, testing frameworks
• Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot
• A Product Engineer mindset (https://posthog.com/blog/what-is-a-product-engineer)
• Ability to navigate complex organizational structures and coordinate across multiple teams, driving topics to success while making significant tradeoff decisions
• Excellent communication skills in English, able to explain complex technical topics to non technical audiences

In this role you will part of the the HERE WeGo Pro team. At HERE WeGo Pro, we bring HERE’s powerful location and routing technology directly to professional drivers and fleets through our Mobile and Web applications. We do so by enriching the HERE WeGo application with premium functionality (such as truck navigation) for our B2B customers. Our team is small (<10 people) but rapidly growing and tightly collaborating with the larger cross-functional team of engineers, designers, and product experts of HERE WeGo. We work together to build reliable, intuitive navigation experiences that support real-world logistics and commercial driving needs. We try to operate like a startup inside a corporate environment, in the sense that we strive to move fast, focus on the essential and be opportunistic in what we choose to work on (but always in accordance with our vision)
