Position Summary
Kemper is seeking a Senior SQL Server Software Developer to join our team. In this role you will work on supporting claims and pricing applications. The senior SQL Developer is responsible for creating, managing, and coding database solutions as well as defining functionality, creating concepts, and brainstorming the technology that is best suited to the project at hand. The senior developer will lead database projects and provides mentoring to less experienced team members on the project.
Position Responsibilities
- Developing database solutions with T-SQL to meet business needs
- Providing hands-on development, unit testing, system testing and support for SQL processes, including bug fixes.
- Support in designing, developing and tuning current SQL Server databases.
- Designing, developing, automating and supporting ETL processes for data staging, extraction, transformation, and data cleansing, and loading of fact tables.
- Excellent communicator with the business owners.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Working closely with Application Developers, Network Administrators and other Technical Support team members.
- Must work well with other developers in a team setting to create database solutions in a timely manner, but also on their own with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to interpret the business need and deliver a clear vision of the result and effort needed to complete that need.
- Coach junior developers in coding and specifying which codes run more efficiently in different circumstances.
- Must be able to solve complex issues independently by not only following the business direction but also providing solutions outside of the box.
- Must be able to lead the business to better solutions.
- Must be able to help coach junior developers in coding and specifying which codes run more efficiently in different circumstances.
- Must be proficient with database storage needs and know how to scale different database scenarios as necessary.
- Must be able to meet with the business and follow-up during the testing process to listen to performance concerns before deployment.
- Invest additional time and effort into the success of a project, the team and the company.
- Approachable and always willing to help.
- Knows when to ask for help or escalate to management.
Position Qualifications
- 6 plus years of experience with SQL Server
- Experience in other MS .net programming languages.
- Python and C# is beneficial.
- Requires familiarity with Microsoft SSRS reporting services.
- Mastery of Microsoft SQL Server 2017 and 2019, SSIS, ETL concepts and TSQL supporting both OLTP and OLAP database types.
- Expertise with performance tuning databases and web applications along with tuning of indexes on large tables.
- Skilled in trouble shooting.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent communicator with the business owners.
- Proficiency with database storage needs and how to scale different database scenarios as necessary.
- Well-developed analytical skills and the ability to analyze situations, challenge assumptions, develop analytical methodologies, present/defend conclusions and recommend action plans.
- Intellectual curiosity and a willingness to dive into a problem and uncover/understand the root cause.
- Time management skills in regards to balancing & prioritizing multiple projects & requests, meeting deadlines, and producing accurate results.

- The range for this position is $89,000 to $148,100. When determining candidate offers, we consider experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location among other factors. This job is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus and Kemper benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, PTO, 401k, etc.)
- This is a hybrid position will be located at Kemper's Downers Grove office.
