About the role

We are looking for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our Operation and Maintenance team on the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR). Based at our Craibstone depot in Aberdeen, you’ll play a key role in maintaining and operating the road network to ensure it remains safe, compliant and well‑maintained for all road users.

This is a hands‑on, site‑based role involving a wide range of highway maintenance activities, emergency response and winter service operations. Safety is at the heart of everything you’ll do, and you’ll work as part of a supportive, experienced team delivering a critical infrastructure service.

What you'll be doing

  • Carrying out routine and cyclic highway maintenance activities such as pothole repairs, minor civil works, drainage maintenance, verge works, grass cutting and repairs to signs, barriers and fencing
  • Installing, maintaining and removing traffic management in line with approved standards (where trained and authorised)
  • Operating vehicles, plant and equipment safely and competently, completing daily checks and reporting defects
  • Taking part in winter service operations including salting, snow clearance, winter patrols and emergency call‑outs
  • Responding effectively to incidents, emergencies and adverse weather events on the network
  • Working in full compliance with health, safety and environmental requirements, attending safety briefings and reporting hazards or near misses
  • Completing timesheets, defect reports and other operational records accurately
  • Acting professionally when dealing with members of the public, road users, clients and emergency services

Who we're looking for

  • A safety‑focused individual with a strong awareness of health and safety in a safety‑critical environment
  • Someone comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions and undertaking physical work
  • A flexible team player, willing to work shifts, nights, weekends and take part in standby and emergency call‑out rotas
  • Reliable, punctual and self‑motivated, with a professional approach to representing the organisation
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team

Desirable experience and qualifications include:

  • Experience in highways maintenance, construction or a similar operational role
  • Full UK driving licence (HGV/LGV Class 2 desirable depending on role)
  • Traffic Management qualifications
  • Winter maintenance experience
  • First Aid certification
  • Plant or equipment competencies (e.g. CPCS or NPORS)
  • Driver CPC where HGV driving is required
